5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Pediatrician

If you are really prepared { I was not}, you are probably doing your research on pediatricians before you give birth.  If you are like me, you wait until you deliver and even then, it may not be a big question in your mind.  I think I was naive, thinking all doctors were the same.  I know they are not.  I also know how lucky we got.  When the pediatrician was checking Maggie over at the hospital, one of John’s friends was just leaving our room and came back to tell us what an amazing pediatrician we had already looking at our baby.  This friend just so happen to work for the clinic, but happen to also use this same pediatrician.  That recommendation took all of the guesswork out of it for us.  I could not be happier with our pediatrician.  I know that isn’t the case for many people, so here are some questions you should consider asking.  These questions assume you know things such as whether they are certified and how long they have been in practice, as well as that your insurance is accepted there.

5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a-2

Availability – Weekly hours, are they all during the day or are there late hours or weekend hours offered?

Beliefs – Breastfeeding, circumcision, vaccinations, co-sleeping, discipline, natural solutions vs. medicine

Who else is available if the doctor is gone?

What is their emergency appointment policy?  Will they do a same day appointment?

Call in questions – who answers these questions, nurse or the doctor?  How long does it typically take to hear back?

While each family has their own individual concerns and needs, these are some of the main questions that I would ask now if I were finding a new pediatrician, or even when looking for a pediatrician for my first.
