Mindful Mondays: Tech Free Evening

Having a tech-free evening can be difficult in this day and age.  We are surrounded by it all day long and have to be very mindful to shut down and disconnect from it for awhile and take the time to connect with the people around us.  With winter nearing and the daylight hours getting shorter, people are spending more time indoors.  For many people, that leads to more TV time so I thought I would share some fun ways to have a tech-free evening.

Play games.  This may be my favorite way to spend an evening at home with the kids.  You can find a list of our favorite games in this 52 weeks of board games!  With so many options, take turns choosing a game so everybody gets a say.

Read a book.  Together or by yourself, this is my other favorite way to spend time.  I’ve been reading to my kids since they were born and I still read to them most nights.  We do a weekly feature of Books We Love if you want to find out some of our favorites.

Go for a walk.  Enjoy the cool, crisp fall air or bundle up for a winter walk.  The dog would love to be invited on this one!

Build a fort.  Who doesn’t love to build a fort – right?  We have a knock-off Nugget couch that we love to drag around for some fort building fun.  Bonus – you can even sleep on this inside of a fort.

Draw, paint or write a story.  Get crafty in whatever way works for you.  I do crafts on the side as a business so we always have lots of craft supplies around.  There are always scraps of wood and my kids use them to build all sorts of random things.  One fun thing is to get a giant tabletop coloring poster that you can all color together.  We even do this over holidays at my family’s get togethers.

Bake.  Or – meal prep together as a family.  Make homemade pasta – it’s super easy!!!  Grab your favorite cookbook, let the kids pick out a recipe and have some fun.  Maybe do some pre-planning so you have the right ingredients.

Have a dance party.   So, maybe this is borderline tech but Alexa is such a good robot when she plays the songs we ask for.

There are tons more ways you can have tech-free fun so plan a night and let me know what you do together for some tech-free family fun.
