Two Natural Bug Off Sprays to DIY

With three small kiddos, it’s no surprise that we spend a lot of time outside playing.  These days lately have been some of my favorites – fresh air, warm sunshine and absolutely no bugs!  Unfortunately, I know that part will end.  Soon, probably very soon, the bugs will be out in full force and we will be swatting at mosquitos, trying to keep from getting tick bites and whatever other bugs may be just waiting for our tasty skin.  When I had my first baby, I soon realized just how much about my life was going to change.  I had always known what was in products, but to be honest, I just didn’t care.  Then, I had this amazing, wonderful, gorgeous little girl in my arms and I knew she deserved better than that.  It wasn’t too long before I was figuring out how to create my own natural bugspray.  Today I am going to share two of our favorite bugspray recipes.

*As with any essential oil products you make,  you should store in a glass bottle.

*Using natural products is so much better for your skin but they are absorbed quicker into your skin so you will need to reapply more often.  Shake before each use.

Mommy’s bug spray

20 drops lavender essential oil

20 drops peppermint essential oil

20 drops purification essential oil

2 ounces distilled water

2 ounces witch hazel

Shake well and apply often.  This is my personal favorite combination because I love how it smells but the bugs hate it.

Back Woods Spray

2 ounces distilled water

2 ounces witch hazel

20 drops citronella essential oil

20 drops peppermint essential oil

20 drops tea tree oil

Shake well and apply.

You can really make any combination of bug off spray scents you want using any combination of the below oils. {Note:  This is only a partial list}

Use between 30 and 60 drops of essential oils for each batch you make.

  • Cedarwood
  • Citronella
  • Clove
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Lemongrass
  • Tea Tree
  • Peppermint
  • Purification
  • Rosemary

Always use pure, unadulterated essential oils.  You can purchase any of these oils here or find out more information on essential oils.

  1. These recipes sound great. I am definitely going to be trying these next summer. My daughter’s legs were so bit up this year. 🙁
