Working out after baby

Working out after baby

This post is part of the weekly breastfeeding blog hop, hosted by The Slacker Mom, and co-hosted by The
Gnome’s Mom and Happiness Redefined. This week’s topic is Exercise and Breastfeeding!

I did really good during my first pregnancy as far as weight gain, although the doctors didn’t think so at first.  I didn’t gain a single pound until 7 months along.  I only gained about 20 total.  A few days after our daughter was born, I was thrilled, only 6 pounds left to lose!  Hurray!  To be completely honest, I love working out!  I feel so good about myself after a workout that it just seems worth it.

Well….her dad had to go back to work after only 2 days home from the hospital, so I was on my own.  I have heard rumors how people bring food to new moms…..not the case for me.  I think I had food brought to me once, maybe twice.  Maggie nursed.  And nursed.  And nursed.  You get the idea.  This was a 24 hour lifestyle for us for quite awhile.  Which left me starving, but still with a baby that just wanted to be breastfeeding, whether she was hungry, needed comfort or wanted to sleep.  So I ate whatever I could easily eat with one hand.  That included cold sandwiches, frozen pizza (I didn’t eat it frozen!), and Kit Kats.  If I was lucky I could squeeze in some cereal, most of the time dripping it on her head or legs poor girl!

This was when I gained weight.  I actually put on 20 pounds AFTER she was born.  I was so disappointed and it wasn’t helping my self esteem.  I finally joined the gym when she was around 7 months.  Pathetic I thought.  I have tons of workout equipment, but trying to fit in a workout with a kid who never naps more than 20 minutes at a time wasn’t working out.  We tried to walk a lot, but I really needed uninterrupted time to focus on my workout.  This wasn’t even going well.  She  would scream sometimes because she wanted to nurse and they would call me back from my workout.

Plus, the gym has limited child care hours and with her schedule, it meant going right after breakfast or not at all.  We finally had a routine and I was doing great working out almost every day for an hour in the morning.  I didn’t notice a change in my breastmilk supply, which was good.

Then fast forward to a few weeks after her birthday….we are pregnant again.  After a brief break because I was too darn sick and too tired to make it there, I got back to going somewhat regularly.  I’m not really sure how it will work out when the baby is here, but for now, I feel like super mom for working out with my big belly.  The one thing I learned fairly quick in this pregnancy is that I can only do 30 minutes of cardio, and some days that’s pushing it.  I can make it through my usual hour, but then I’m useless.  30 minutes, I am still pretty functionable.

What about you?  Did you workout when you were breastfeeding?  Did it create any struggles for you?

  • Reading the beginning of you post made me {somewhat} sad. My husband and I had SO MANY meals brought over. We were even able to freeze a few so we could have it later.

    • I have heard all of my friends say the same thing. It’s so odd to me. We both have huge families and lots of friends. Not to mention, most of them have kids already. That’s why I told John (without any guilt) that if they want to come visit this baby, they have to bring food or they can just stay away…..does that make me mean ? I’m okay if it does. I have been freezing a lot more meals this time around. Every time I make something, I make enough to freeze some for after baby gets here. Although….I keep eating the frozen stuff, but I think I should have some frozen by June.
