The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls Book Review

You may recall a few months back when we reviewed books three and four of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series from WorthyKids Books. Well – we loved them then and we love books five and six as well. If you haven’t heard of them before – let’s get to the introduction.  The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) and The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls:  The Lion’s Road (Book 6). The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls is a bible-based adventure series of paperback books. Peter, Mary and their dog embark on a different adventure in every book that takes them through a bible story that kids will love. They are just hanging out living their life at their Great-Uncle Solomon’s house. When they hear the lions roar – they are off on the adventure. Throughout the story, they have to solve a secret scroll message. In The Shepherd’s Stone – they meet David while he is tending his sheep. They follow along with him as he brings food to his brothers in Bethlehem and then as he fights Goliath. Each step of their journey presents them with the opportunity to see God at work in the life of David. We loved the way Hank and Mary got to hear how much David trusted in God. As they journey through Death Valley, we read about how Satan tries to deter us but how God is there to keep us safe. A powerful message. The adventure is very captivating and the kids always ask for more than one chapter a night. I love having these amazing stories that I can read with the kids or they can read to themselves. Finding quality stories with good values that I want my kids to read can be challenging but The Secret of the Scrolls totally nails it. The kids and I love the stories. At the end of the book – there will be a few different bible verses you can read that point to different events in the story. In The Lion’s Roar – some of these verses point to the story of David and the Israelites being captured, Daniel in the lion’s den and more. While the story itself is an adventure – it brings into perspective for the kids that the story is really a bible adventure. The story is told in such a fun way that keeps us wanting to read more – and waiting for the newest book to release. Keep your eyes peeled – book 7 all be here soon. Now that you know what these books are all about and how much our family loves reading them – I have a surprise. You can enter to win the entire set – books 1 through 7 AND they are choosing three winners. Awesome, right?! Make sure you enter because you WANT these books in your kids’ hands.   Read what others are saying about The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls by clicking the image […]

Bringing Bible Stories to Life with Secret of the Hidden Scrolls {Book Review}

[…]time, especially a series that I can dig into.  That’s why I’m excited to share The Secret of the Hidden Scroll series with you.   The kids and I look forward to bedtime so we can snuggle up all together in my bed and read some stories. When we started reading The Great Escape {Book 3} from WorthyKids, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, we were all hooked from the lion’s roar. We were only a chapter into this one and couldn’t wait to read Journey to Jericho {Book 4}. In the words of my favorite eight-year-old, “We have to get the first two books!”  I’m pretty sure my daughter could relate to Mary so much because of her love of books. In each adventure, Mary, Peter, and Hank are off to solve the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls. They have a certain amount of time to solve the phrase on each script. As the adventure goes on, the trio ends up having to escape different situations and the scroll in Peter’s bag ALWAYS starts shaking at an inopportune time. We love when the kids uncover a word on the scroll because then we have to pause the story for the kids to guess what the rest of the scroll says. Once they solve it all, the trio is transported back to Great-Uncle Solomon’s house. Reading The Great Escape, the kids and I kept wondering throughout the chapters who the mysterious great magician was. We knew he was significant in the story and discovering his role was kind of an ah-ha moment.  There are great pictures throughout the story and my six-year-old may not sit still while we read but when he knows there is a picture, he is right there to soak it all in as he listens to the story. After the story ends, there is a section that shows you where to go to read more about the events from the story in the Bible, broken down by sections. This part is taken from About the Author section but it perfectly describes this series. Mike combines biblical accuracy with adventure, imagination and characters who are dear to his heart I love this description.  We love the suspense in the story and the way that it brings our own emotions into the story as if we were really there.  When Princess Shephara’s brother died, we all felt her sadness as we read that part of the story.  When Peter had to quickly hide in the bushes in Journey to Jericho, we held our breath hoping he didn’t get caught.  Then when Hank disappeared, we {as a total animal loving family} were really worried about what happened to him.  Bringing our feelings into the story made it so much more exciting as we were reading through it.  I already have books 1 {The Beginning} and 2 {Race to the Ark} in my shopping cart because we are finishing the last chapter of Journey to Jericho and can’t wait to start reading the first two books in the series and we really hope there are more! They are recommended for ages 6-9 and I would say that is pretty accurate.  I’m reading them to my 8, 6 and 4-year-old but my oldest could definitely read these herself. We really love the Secrets of the Hidden Scrolls series and after we finish them, they go on my daughter’s bookshelves for her to read to me at bedtime.  Check out what some of my fellow blogger friends have to say about them as […]

10 Ways We Use Lemon Oil

Since we have been going through the oils one by one that are part of the Young Living Premium Starter Kit, today we will tackle lemon oil.   When it comes to essential oils, everybody has their favorites, and lemon oil is one of my favorites.  Not only is it a very affordable essential oil, but it has so many uses and it just plain smells amazing!   Lemon oil is strong, purifying, citrus scent that is revitalizing and uplifting.   Here are 10 ways we use Lemon essential oil at our house. Nausea This may just be me, but this last pregnancy, I was quite nauseous.  I figured it couldn’t hurt to try something different since I didn’t want to get sick, so I started keeping the bottle of lemon oil in my pocket and just inhaling it when I started feeling sick. Remove glue, adhesive or crayon Having a 2 and 4 year old and a lot of friends around, there is a good chance that we will find crayon or sticker residue on the floor or the wall on occasion.  Use 1-2 drops of lemon oil to help remove that. Clean and Sanitize Adding 2-3 drops of lemon oil to a spray bottle of water, you can clean around the house and it smells so good! Improve your mood Either by adding a few drops to a cotton ball or simply inhaling this fresh scent, you can revitalize your mind, body and spirit. Clean your carpets Add 10–15 drops of lemon essential oil to a gallon of carpet cleaning solution to help pull out stains, brighten carpet and rugs, and leave a fresh smell in the room. Deoderize your refrigerator Place a few drops of lemon oil on a cotton ball and place it in the fridge to help eliminate odors. Balance your skin Add a drop to your skin to help balance and minimize oil production. Add to water Add a drop or two of lemon oil to your water or tea for a refreshing pick me up. Help eliminate coughs By mixing with a carrier oil and applying on the neck, or rubbing on the feet, or even diffusing it, this can help kick that cough.  We use this a lot in the diffuser in the kids’ room if they have a cough. Cooking Lemon oil can be used in cooking for marinades to add that delicious lemon flavor. When applying lemon oil to the skin, direct exposure of that area of the skin to sunlight should be avoided for at least 12 hours. Edited to add:  My niece had tons of blackheads in her ears.  I applied a drop of lemon oil to the tip of a q-tip and rubbed it on the blackheads.  Within 2 days, almost all of them were gone.  This was after they had tried multiple other things with no results.   Disclosure:  None of the information available on Our Piece of Earth has been evaluated or approved by the FDA.  These articles should not replace using personal judgment or seeking medical treatment when needed.  They are also not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.  Talk with your health care provider or a certified aromatherapist before using essential oils.  All essential oils are not created equal, so do your research prior to using.   These are just some of the many uses for lemon oil.  This is absolutely one of my must have oils.  What are your favorite uses? Books We Love: The Magic Attic Club Megan’s Masquerade

[…]my kids. We recently discovered a new series that my daughter diligently read through the backs of the books to see what would interest her. Well – one book in and her and I both asked for the rest! The Magic Attic Club is about a group of friends who visit one of the friends’ attic and are magically transported back in time. In Megan’s Masquerade, Megan is transported back in time to the Revolutionary War. While some of the characters in the story are imaginary, many are very real characters – Thomas Jefferson, etc.. A super fun story to read as Megan journeys through dangerous territory to deliver a very important message about the war. We will be over here reading through the rest of the series if you need us. Blueberry Trainers *Review*

[…]for the last 12 years and still have one kiddo in cloth diapers.  They take great pride that most of the products they sell have also been used on their own children so they can share their personal experience with you.   If you have a potty trainer, or are going to be getting to that stage, read on!  Blueberry Trainers are training pants that feel and look like real underwear.  Not only that, they are adorable!  I still can’t decide which ones are my favorite – my daughter is potty training, but I love the traffic and dinosaurs prints – ahh, when the little guy is ready!   These trainers have an inner lining made with cotton velour, and a hidden layer of super absorbent microterry and PUL.  The waist, leg bands and outer layer are 50 % cotton and 50 %  polyester.  The hidden soaker is 100 % polyester and the inner lining is 80 % cotton and 20 % polyester.  And…they are made in the USA!  Because these trainers are only partially waterproof, they will contain small accidents, but are not designed for naptime or overnight.  Blueberry trainers are available in 3 different sizes.   Small fits 22-28 pounds  Medium fits 25-35 pounds  Large fits 32-42 pounds.  Maggie is just a little peanut, and barely even hits the 22 pound mark.  We received the Blueberry swirls in a small to review.  I was a little worried about how they would fit Maggie since she was barely at 22 pounds, but I was pleasantly surprised that they fit her great!  The Blueberry trainers are quite soft.  They definitely feel like regular underwear.  When she does pee in these underwear, they hold the pee pretty well, but she can immediately feel that she is peeing and will tell me uh oh!  That is important.  I want her to feel it if she is wet.  If she pees a lot though, these underwear won’t hold it all, which is the point!  Because these look like real underwear, they should pull up and down like real underwear, right?  And they do!  Maggie just turned 2, and dressing and undressing isn’t something that comes easily to her just yet but once I showed her how to hook her thumbs inside the waistband, she was able to pull them on and off mostly by herself. I love how cute they are!  The pattern we have would be great for a boy or a girl!  They are so soft, I would even wear these underwear!   They are not waterproof, so if you want complete protection, you will need a cover over these.  Even when she had a stinky mess in these, the underwear contained the poo – very important, am I right?  They do need to be pulled down, so it can be a bit of a mess if they poop in these.  It isn’t too bad, unless your child does what Maggie did and wiggle and jump and protest until she steps in it – ugh!  If you are looking for some trainers for your little potty trainer, these are perfect!  Of the trainers we have tried so far, these are my favorites because they are so similar to regular underwear and helps them learn their skill of pulling their underwear up and down all by themselves. When toddlers meet technology {Tuesday’s Toddler Tales linkup}

[…] She doesn’t get to watch it all the time, but when she thinks about it, I usually let her.  The other thing we do a lot of together on the computer is read her BookLingual books.  They are written in Spanish and English and are fun for us to read together. We also YouTube books on CD sometimes.  Mostly we do that because one of my favorite children’s books is not available for purchase for less than somewhere around $50 and we are not paying that!   It’s Fire Truck and it’s very catchy and really super awesome!  I try really hard to not be playing around on my phone when the kids are awake, but I am guilty.  When Maggie pipes up and says, are you on Facebook mommy – I feel very guilty and know that I am not focusing on what I should be.  Thanks baby girl for making me remember. A statement I heard in our class that really puts things in perspective for me is – turning on the TV or computer, whatever it may be – is allowing the media into your house.  Whatever is on the TV is now invited into your home.  Does that show have the values you want to teach in your house?  Each week we are linking up for Tuesday’s Toddler Tales. Stinking cute diapers from Rumpkinz *Sponsor Spotlight* #switchtocloth

[…]on the tooshy.  I love the “PU” and how the letters are in the same print as the front of the diaper.  Plus, the embroidery is sewn only into the minky, not the hidden PUL so there are no worries about it leaking through the embroidery.  The elastic at the back and on the leg openings is very stretchy and because of the softness of the fabric, won’t ever leave red marks on the Charlie man.  The wipeDid I mention I also received an organic cloth wipe? The wipe measures 8 inches x 8 inches.  The perfect size for pretty much everything and it fits perfectly when folded in half into a wipe container.  Each wipe is hand sewn using unbleached, dye free and certified organic fabric that is soft on one side and a natural hemp on the other side.  They are perfect for those little tooshies or for those little faces and hands that always need cleaning.  The wipe was awesome!  I wondered at first because it is very thin so I was figuring it wouldn’t be as absorbent as I would like.  I was wrong.  The large size and the different fabrics made this wipe perfect.  I would love to add some more of these to our stash.  The wipes I own that I use the most are thicker, and while they work great, it makes it hard to get more than a few into a wipe container to throw into the diaper bag.  With the wipes from Rumpkinz, I could definitely fit in as many as I need for the day.  These are a must have! If you are looking for a terrific custom pocket diaper, fitted diaper, or any of those fabulous accessories that you need..ahem…want, visit Rumpkinz on Facebook and snag yourself a Rumpkinz diaper.  You won’t be disappointed.  Want to win a Rumpkinz diaper of your own?  Enter now as part of the Switch to Cloth giveaway event with over $400+ in cloth diapers and accessories.  Good luck! *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned product for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are 100% my own and only influenced by my experience with the product and company and may differ from […]

#FluffyXmas Sponsor spotlight *Diapers By Chris*

[…]so customers can choose their favorites and create the diaper they will enjoy for many years.Most of the diapers you will find at Diapers by Chris are AI2’s and fitteds, but she also makes pockets and AIO’s and hybrid fitteds once in awhile, or by request.  Now, many WAHM’s have another job as well, and so does Chris.  One that I think is pretty interesting.  She drives a log truck!  How cool is that!  She drove up until 3 weeks before she had her daughter, and now is driving again.  The part she hates is leaving her little girl. The diaper I received is a cheerful reindeer Christmas pattern featuring reindeer, Christmas trees and holly leaves.  It’s a one size, AI2 diaper.  AI2-All in two because there is a cover and the insert lays in for quick and easy diaper changes.  The diaper is a woven cotton outer print with a hidden inner layer of PUL.  The inside is made from a wicking jersey material.  There are a few things that make this diaper unlike any other I own.  The wicking jersey is the first.  I like how trim this diaper is – much more trim than some diapers with fleece inners.  The insert is actually 2 inserts, each with a double layer of Organic Bamboo Fleece (OBF) topped with luscious cotton velour sewn together.  These diapers dry really quickly because the diaper cover and inserts are separate and since the inserts are sewn together instead of one thicker insert, it dries quicker.The second thing that makes this diaper different than any other diapers I own, is the wing snaps.  Some diapers have 2, 3, or even 4 snaps on each wing.  Most of the diapers I own with 3 snaps on each wing have two on top and one on the bottom.  This diaper is opposite, with 2 snaps on the bottom and 1 on the top.  I was a little unsure of this when I saw it, but when we used it, we got such a great fit.  The double rows of snaps across the front of the diaper aren’t lined up directly on top of each other, the top row is shifted just a little, and not on accident.  It’s designed that way to be in line with the wing snaps.  Because of the placement of all of the snaps, getting a great fit is easy.  I have found this to be one of the best fitting diapers across Charlie’s waist.  That top snap being more towards the center of the diaper than the bottom pulls the waist more snugly around baby.  That’s where I tend to get leaks with some diapers on Charlie, but never on this one.The inserts look thin, and I wondered if they would be absorbent, but we didn’t have leaks with this on either Charlie or Maggie.  We didn’t use it overnight on Charlie though since I will only use a fitted on him.There is gentle elastic around the thighs and on the back of this diaper.  I loved that I never had to worry about whether or not he was going to leak up the back (especially when he’s in the jumperoo).  The elastic helped create a great fit. There are 3 rise settings on this diaper and it is designed to fit from 12-35 pounds, possibly larger.  I wish I had this diaper sooner, I am curious if it would have fit him even before 12 pounds.  The design of the elastic around the legs makes me think that it possibly would, especially on my chunkier little guy.  *I did ask Chris about the size range to be sure, and she also mentioned that a mom told her that her 11 pounder was able to wear the diaper with no problems.* I love this diaper, and yes, even after Christmas, I will still be using this diaper year round.   Are you ready to shop?  Chris has so many different choices to allow customers to be sure they get exactly what they are looking for.  You can get wicking jersey, crushed panne, or suedecloth inners.  The outer may be cotton with hidden PUL or with PUL outers and a choice of inner fabric.  Chris has since changed her insert design to a petal type soaker with 3 layers of OBF in the bottom petal and 2 layers of OBF topped with cotton velour on the top petal.  You will have the option of snap in or lay in soakers.  With all of these choices – you will have fun designing your own diaper!   Like Diapers by Chris on FacebookBuy one now or Enter to win one starting December 1st as part of Merry Fluffy Christmas. #Fluffy Xmas Sponsor Spotlight *Roxie Harlow*

[…]her stash with some cheap-o diapers, but soon began drooling over the cuteness factor of some of the WAHM’s she saw on Etsy and Hyena cart.  Since she is kind of a DIYer, she decided to hit the sewing machine and make her own.  After failing a few times, she finally got the fabric combination that she liked.  Soon after making her own kids’ diapers, friends and friends of friends began asking for some.  She decided to add them to her Etsy shop, and that’s how she got here today!   Plus, she is pregnant and due Christmas day!  How exciting!!!Baby is due on Christmas Day! Ahh! And yes, the embroidered diapers are all minky outer, hidden PUL and micro-chamois inner. I had so much fun looking through the diapers on Etsy to decide what to review.  I finally decided on an adorable “I smell trouble” skunk pocket diaper.  Guess what…it is adorable! The diaper This diaper is made from a white minky outer with “I SMELL TROUBLE” and a skunk embroidered on the butt.  The inside is made from micro-chamois with a hidden layer of PUL.  *Note:  the review is only on the diaper, not an insert*  There are 3 different rise settings to fit babies size 10-35 pounds Correction:  these fit rom 15-35 pounds.  There is a single row of snaps across the front of the diaper, and 2 snaps on one wing and 3 on the other.  There are also crossover snaps for those tiny waists. The pocket opening on this diaper is plenty large – even daddy could stuff it!  I love that thechamois inside isn’t the normal white color.  This diaper has a brown  inner.  I’m not sure why, but I love having the inside of the diaper colored.  I like how the snaps are color coordinating and match the skunk!  Because of the fleece and the minky outer, the elastic at the back and legs is really gentle on babies skin so you don’t have to worry about red marks. The lowdownJohn likes using this diaper because of the one simple row of snaps.  He loves how gentle and soft it is on both of the kids’ skin.  Both Maggie and Charlie are on the smallest setting on this diaper – Maggie is 22 pounds and 26 months, Charlie is 16 pounds and 5 months.  I have no doubts that this diaper will last through the high end of the weight range. I did find that this diaper is a bit wide in between the legs.  It still fits fine, but it is wider than many of our diapers.  We were able to get a good fit on both of the kids with this diaper.  I feel like Charlie just fits in this diaper at 16 pounds.  This diaper has worked well for us on both of our little stinkers. You can tell that a lot of care and time was put into making the diaper.  The design has a lot of stitching and it is done really well.  I am confident this will hold up over the years.   Roxie is on maternity leave right now, and the shop is closed until January, but you should definitely check out her facebook album and see her custom diapers, fabric albums and so much more!Visit her Etsy store.   If you are looking for some great new (boy) prints, be sure to check these out!  Which diaper is your favorite from the custom or fabrics album?   Enter to win this diaper as part of Merry Fluffy Christmas *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned product for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are 100% my own and based solely on my experience with the company and […]

Explaining hybrid fitted nighttime cloth diapers #FluffyXmas

[…]diaper options.  Along my journey, there are a few diapers I was dying to check out, and one of them was Poopsiedoodles, so imagine how excited I was when Noelle said she would send me one for review. I am always stoked to find diapers that are just a bit different.  Poopsiedoodles are a one size bamboo hybrid fitted cloth diaper. {Wow, two of my favorite cloth diaper words in one sentence….bamboo and fitted}. With one row of 12 snaps across the front, as well as one row of 8 snaps for the fold down rise, this diaper will fit from approximately 10-40 pounds.  With 3 snaps on each wing, you will get a secure fit on baby no matter how wiggly he may be. There are also crossover snaps to allow the diaper to fit those teeny wasted babies.  These snaps can also be used to snap the diaper together for storing when on the go, whether dirty or clean. What makes Poopsiedoodles a bit different is that the fold down rise actually snaps down to keep it in place better.  When using the diaper for bigger babies and toddlers, the inserts snap into the fold down rise snaps so they don’t rub against baby.  I absolutely love this feature because I hate seeing red marks on Charlie from the snaps from some diapers with fold down rise.  If you need a more in between fit between the snapped down rise and fully unsnapped, you can just fold the rise down to where you need it without snapping it to the diaper. Let’s take a look at the sizing a little bit.     Each diaper comes with 2 inserts.  A large soaker {which covers all internal snaps} and a second double petal soaker, sewn together at one end.  The inserts snap together for maximum absorbency.  The inserts are made from bamboo fleece and bamboo fleece topped with cotton velour.  When using the fold down rise, snap the small one into the back of the diaper {as opposed to the front}, so it stays put for your little one.  When using the diaper without the fold down rise, use both inserts together for maximum absorbency.  Because I am use to diapers with the inserts snapping into the back, I have, on occasion laid the diaper backwards before I realized what I was doing, hehe. The diaper is an adorably fun Lobstahs!  The kids love it and I have to admit, it makes me want to pretend to get them with my pinchers!  Hehe.  It is made with a cotton knit outer, a hidden layer of poly fleece between the outer print, and a soft inner velour. With soft, stretchy elastic at the back and legs, the diaper gets a snug fit on baby, no matter what perfect size he may be. But what makes a hybrid you ask? The hidden layer of poly fleece acts as a repelling barrier.  The liquid hits it and sort of bounces back into the diaper and the soakers, giving them more of a chance to absorb it.   What does that mean? That means that this diaper can be worn for longer periods of time without a cover.  The inserts absorb more of the pee before it reaches the outer layer.  Giving your child more of a chance to show off that cute fluff without getting your furniture or floor wet.   I love this diaper, in part because of my favorite feature {do you remember what that is}.  This diaper is the complete package, and one that I’m confident could fit a smaller baby without too much added bulk.   Enter to win a PoopsieDoodles hybrid fitted cloth diaper from December 1-7th as part of my Merry Fluffy Christmas package.  Good luck!   What is your favorite feature of the PoopsieDoodles hybrid fitted cloth diaper?  Have you checked out Noelle’s shop?  Which diaper is your favorite?   *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned product for the purpose of this review.  All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and only influenced by my experience with the product and […]

Brothers, Books and Bonding Time

[…]to astronaut to diver and so much more, your child will go on a new adventure with every turn of the page.  The fun doesn’t stop with their beautiful face though, 1-2-3 Blast Off With Me has so much more to offer.  Your child will find their name hidden on a train, or dig up numbers on a construction site, and practice counting backwards from 10.  Every page features a fun skill for you and your child to engage in together.  This has been such a great book for Charlie and he loves to show off his face and tell you about what he is doing.  What I love the post is the small details.  Like the fire truck has Charlie’s birthday for a license plate number.  How fun is that? The other night I was lucky enough to catch some brotherly bonding in action as Charlie was reading his book to Henry.  Cutest. Picture. Ever.  EVER!!!  I love this moment so much and I know that I See Me! Personalized Books will give us many more of these moments in the future.  While I love sitting down and reading through this book with Charlie, I love that he enjoys it so much that he wants to show it off to his brother.   Our boys have been on many adventures with 1-2-3 Blast Off With Me.  Which personalized book will your child choose for his next […]

Passport to China + Review

[…]we go.  We are lucky enough to have some coins or bills from other countries as well.  The back of the book has a food journal you can copy and use and a passport with stamps for each of the countries you can visit.   It’s interesting to me to learn more about the cultures around meal times in the different countries.  Reading through that at the beginning of that country introduces a lot of ideas. If your kids are anything like mine, they love trying out these customs.  Now, like any Chinese meal, we HAVE to use chopsticks.  The kids each have their own set of chopsticks that my sister sent us when she was in Japan. Can we get to the important part here?  Tasting the food.  I’m not going to lie to you, I’m pretty picky, but I try not to be because I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.  My kids are all hit or miss.  The boys usually eat anything.  Maggie, not so much.  But since I instituted the, “I don’t care what you eat” rule, it’s been better.  I serve them the meal.  They choose what they eat.  I don’t coax or bargain with them.  There’s no meal time battle and she is trying so many more foods without complaining first.  It’s amazing!  That’s what I love most about eating our way around the world – so many new food experiences and we can make notes on things we loved, things we would leave out next time or maybe finding more foods from that area if we loved them all.  Having a few different meals to make for each country gives us a real dining experience {and allows us choices in case we don’t like something}.  Each meal is rated in forks to let you know the difficulty of preparing it.   We follow up everything with some books on China – we love to read so this is the easy part.   Geography Through Art introduces so many different types of cultural art to your family.  We had a blast making Chinese Scrolls.  Maggie really loved the variety of different drawings and I had a lot of fun doing the activities with them {and I am NO artist}. Legos has become the kids’ very favorite thing to do when we are home.  I like to try to find a building challenge anytime we study a landmark from a certain place.  We all worked together to build the Great Wall of China.  Don’t just see Quicksketch and look at the picture.  Be sure to read through it for some learning challenges.  This quicksketch introduces them to the concept of depth in a picture.  Draw yourself in the front, draw yourself in the background.  Are they different?  It also includes an explanation on why the two should look different.  Before each section in the book you can also find facts on each continent. If you are a homeschool family or just want to bring more culture into your home, you will love the culture bundle.  What state or country will you learn about next?  What is your favorite thing about […]

[…]is awake, however, the treadmill doesn’t work out for both of us.  That lead me to discover other forms of exercise that she can do alongside me.  The long forgotten yoga (at least for me).  The problem, she always kicked me off my yoga mat.  Little stinker!   When I found out about Yoga Lifestyle and their Bheka Long LIfe Yoga Mats By The Inch, I had to check them out.  Mats that are the perfect size for my little girl?  Yes please! That’s right, get the mat that fits your little yogi.  From 36″ up to 108″.  Each mat is 24″ wide and 1/8 ” thick.  If you are looking for something with a bit more cushion, check out the Deluxe Long Life Mat. Mats by the Inch are made from a super secret combination of PVC and linen which make it a non slip surface even when moist.  The orange peel texture is perfect for your little yogi.  Each mat is Okeo-Tex certified so it is safe for use by you or your little ones!  What that means is that no toxic chemicals are released into the environment when these mats are made.  They are fabricated in Germany and hand cut right at the Yoga LifeStyle Warehouse.  If it gets dirty or sweaty, just wipe it clean with a damp cloth or throw it in the washing machine.  Mats are available in 4 different colors.  The cost is $0.55 an inch plus a $10 set up charge.  But, if you order a second in the same color, you don’t have the $10 charge again.   Maggie loves having her own Yoga mat to work out next to mommy on.  And I’m guessing in about a year, I will just have to get Charlie man one of his own.  The fact that it is just her size is awesome because she likes to roll it up and put it away when she is done…or carry it around and lay it out here or there.  I never know where it will end up.  Because it’s non sticky, it’s nice when she puts it on the floor in the bathroom when she decides to play in the sink.   I love that Maggie copies me so much.  It makes me even more motivated to get in shape.  So we will be getting out our yoga mats regularly to get moving. Yoga Lifestyle offers more than just this though.  Yoga clothing, accessories, dvd’s.  If you are looking for some great products, be sure to visit Yoga Lifestyle. Retail purchases are FREE shipping. Putting all of our veggies in a basket with Learning Resources

[…]me with, she cooks in her kitchen.  Since she cooks a lot too, it only seems right to have a lot of the same foods we cook with.  This New Sprouts Bushel of Veggies is the perfect fit for her play kitchen.  We already have a decent amount of food for her kitchen, but a lot of it is really cheap feeling.  That’s fine, but it also means it gets tossed out rather quickly because it gets ruined.   The Bushel of Veggies from Learning Resources is not cheap feeling food.  Each piece has a durable feel to it and will hold up for a long time.   The bushel basket of veggies includes corn, cucumber, broccoli, red pepper, eggplant, carrot, yellow pepper, asparagus and potato.  A great range of veggies that you can’t find just anywhere.  I love the asparagus, and so does Charlie!  It’s his favorite “food” to chew on.  Playing with the foods allows my kids to hear and talk about the different veggies.  Especially being able to expose Charlie to those foods that he isn’t eating yet is good for him. Having their play mimic the things we want them to eat helps us focus on healthy eating while they are having fun. Cooking with Kids: Salty and Sweet Trail Mix

[…]was so excited about these and already planned to pick some up, so now I just get to look like mom of the year {again}.  They had already put in a few requests for some add ins, so we got busy shopping.  This time our aim was sweet and salty trail mix. When the kids saw what we had in the cart, they were squealing with delight, so you can bet we got right to it when we got home.  I mean, what kid doesn’t get excited about Goldfish crackers, mini marshmallows, chocolate candies and pretzels?!  I won’t lie, I was pretty excited myself!  I will share our secret recipe with you, but beware, these are pretty precise measurements.  In all seriousness though, we use this as a math lesson.  It’s a great way to introduce measurements and for the kids to learn how many 1/4 cups it takes to make 1 cup, or whatever other math fun we focus on in the kitchen that day. Ingredients Goldfish crackers – we chose Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, but you choose your favorites.  Now is a great time to stock up on all of your favorites and some other goodies Mini Marshmallows Pretzels Chocolate Candies Directions Start with the Goldfish crackers.  We started with one cup of Goldfish crackers.  We added in about 1/2 cup mini marshmallows, 1/4 cup chocolate candies, and 3/4 cup pretzels.  See – a great way to talk about the different measurements, or for the younger kids, which is more / less than the others.  It involves a lot of conversation and even more giggles when somebody sneaks a bite before we are finished, after all, that is half the fun, right?! Anyways, after our {not so} precise measurements, we shook it up really well, then added in more of anything we decided we wanted more of in it.  We had so much fun working together and being silly and even more fun eating it.  You can bet that when it was time for Maggie to do her writing assignments, she made sure she had a bowlful of fresh fruit and a few handfuls of her new favorite trail mix.  Now her brain was ready to get to writing.   What stories will you create when you let your imagination run […]

Winter Fun at the Ice Castles

[…]the time we pulled into Miller Park, the kids were extremely antsy and couldn’t wait to get out of the truck.  I’ll be honest with you, once I saw the front of the ice castles, I was in a hurry to get out of the truck and dressed in our winter gear. Do you see the creeper face in the background of this picture we had taken at the entrance to the ice castles? We were all in awe from the beginning.  This place is amazing.  We were barely in the entrance when the kids were entranced by the icicles.  It only got better for them from that point on.  As soon as you enter, you will notice the stunning waterfall, made even more impressive by the LED lights built into the ice, giving it a gorgeous color.  With the colors changing throughout the castles, you can’t help but be mesmerized. We quickly discovered the ice slide.  And there we stayed for quite some time.  Even John took a turn down the slide.  Then we moved on to this ice tunnel.  I think claustrophobic, but the kids couldn’t get enough of it! Everywhere you walk, there are thrones, benches, caves and more that you will find almost hidden in the ice castle itself.   From something that began in Bill Christensen’s backyard, the ice castles now span an acre, featuring about 2,100 tons of ice, 5 million gallons of water.  With “ice farmers” growing ice and then harvesting it for the ice castles, between 5 and 20 tons of ice are added each night.  These icicles are sculpted into the existing ice formations, and drenched with water creating a one of a kind look.  As the ice castles melt, the water will flow to a lake located next to the park. If you are looking for a fun, family activity, a romantic date night, or just fun with friends, visit the ice castles located in 4 different states across the US.   Have you ever visited an ice castle like this before?  What are some of your favorite winter […]

[…]and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #YoursandMine With all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it seems like a lot of things get left in the dust.  This year, don’t let your relationship suffer.  There are tons of ways to spice things up this holiday season.  Here are 5 date night ideas to put the sizzle back into your relationship this winter. Two Step Round the Christmas Tree.  If you haven’t heard that Christmas song, it is one of my favorites.  Okay, maybe it is my favorite.  It is that one song that I hit repeat on over and over.  Get your love on the dance floor without leaving the house.  Pick out some of your favorite Christmas tunes or just turn on a station and go with the flow.  Not only do you get to dance with the one you love, but every year when you hear those songs you will be reminded of those memories you made on the dance floor by the Christmas tree. Have a Snowball Fight.  Or build a snow fort.  I suppose this one will probably only work if you live in a state with snow unless you get really creative, but have some fun with it.  How about some snow angels outside and warming up inside with some hot cocoa. Bake Christmas Cookies.  Pick out a new recipe to try and spend your night baking some delicious cookies that will be fun to eat together too.  My rules – food fights are fair game.  Nothing is more fun than getting flour all over, right?  Need a recipe idea?  How about this Rolo cookie recipe that is my favorite?! Open an Early Christmas Gift.  Wrap up a little something special for the love of your life.  Make it sassy or simple.  Naughty or nice.  This is so much fun and such a simple surprise after a long day shopping at the mall.  Want something a little more spicy than presents under the tree?  How about the K-Y ® Yours+Mine Couples Lubricant date night pack?  1 free meal {$50 value} for two people from PEACHDISH.com delivered to your door, a $5 VUDU movie credit AND the K-Y ®.  Everything you need for a date night in.  Play Secret Santa or Un-stuff Those Stockings.  Who says you have to wait until Christmas to have all of the fun?  Plan ahead for date night, and leave a little surprise for your sweetie each day for a week before your date night.  Have some fun with this, a love note, some candy, a candle, go crazy with this, there are so many ideas.  If you want some ideas to spice this up a bit, check out K-Y.com. You are probably going to be hitting up Walmart at some point during your shopping season, so why not pick up everything you need for a date night in without making a special trip.  Whether your date night will be naughty or nice, you are sure to spice things up this holiday season. How do you make time for date night during the busy Christmas […]

Why my toddler is spending summer in style with Zupers activewear shorts + {Giveaway}

[…]not joking!  She was very active and had us cracking up at her. Maggie’s favorite feature of the shorts though is the fun little treasure pocket.  I know she will love it more this summer when we go for walks.  Maggie is a rock collector.  I will randomly find them hidden in our house and we have no idea how she gets them in here!  I know she will be filling her pocket with her rock treasures from our walks.  Living in Minnesota it gets pretty hot during the summer, so I love that they are moisture wicking and UN protectant to keep her protected and comfortable.  I’m interested in how rip resistant they really are.  We have a lot of stickers in our yard, and during the summer, they tend to rip up our clothes when we land in them, which, we inevitably do.  The tagless label is nice as well so Maggie isn’t being scratched by it all day long.  Zupers are made in the USA (yay) and available in a wide variety of sizes from 6 months up to 14 years.  {Unfortunately, not adult sizes} Zupers shorts are available in 6 different colors and prints – get one or get them all!  Stylish girls active wear that your little girl can actually be active in while being comfortable!   The only downside is that they are lay flat or hang dry, but they do dry really fast (especially if you hang them out in the sun since you will be wearing them during summer). Buy them on Amazon for $26.00 or take 40% off any full priced item with code SPRING40 and get free shipping on orders of over $50 {only at Zupers website}.  Join Zupers on Facebook or Twitter to know when the new collections arrive, or find out when there are great deals! The fine folks at Zupers are giving away a pair of shorts to one lucky little girl!  Enter below. a Rafflecopter giveaway  I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Who needs pants? {Stuffin’ Fluff review}

[…]snapped the same on each side so I can’t use the center one – silly, I know}.  Each wing of the diaper has 3 snaps.  There are also 2 crossover snaps on one wing to ensure a snug fit on those littlest of babies.  The snaps are the perfect accent color to add a little more color to your diaper. The diaper will fit approximately 10-35 pounds.  When using the fold down rise, it will fit until approximately 20 pounds. The soaker is made up of 2 soakers sewn together at one end.  I really like that it is actually sewn together at the end, instead of in a little more.  This speeds up drying time because the entire soaker can be opened up to dry.  The soaker is made from a hemp/organic cotton blend, and organic bamboo French terry, topped with cotton velour, for a total of 7 layers of fabric in the soaker.  The stitching on both the soaker and the diaper is done in an accent color to match the diaper. The elastic on the back and legs of this diaper is fantastic.  There is a lot of stretch {hello chunky babies} and it is so gentle on babies skin.  You will not find red marks from this diaper. The monkey pattern is just perfect for Charlie man, because, well, that’s what he is – a monkey!  Doesn’t he look like a little stud in his Stuffin’ Fluff matching diaper and shirt? Want to get your hands…well, okay, your baby’s bum on one of these diapers, and perhaps a matching shirt to go with it?  Check out Stuffin’ Fluff on Facebook for a huge selection of materials to choose from.  See the latest stocking over at Hyena Cart.   Plus, right now, as part of the Falling Into Fitted Diapers grand prize, you can enter to win one of your own Stuffin’ Fluff […]

[…]diapers have a unique feature where the rise snaps snap into the row of snaps across the front of the diaper to fit a newborn.  You are still able to snap the diaper closed small enough for a newborn even when using 2 snaps for the rise.  See picture below.*Closure – Snaps – single row of 12 across with 2 snaps on each wing Outer material -PULInnter material –  Suede cloth or pink or brown microfleeceInsert – quad fold of flannel and microfiberManufactured in the USAARV – $19.00 This diaper has held up awesome!  When it arrived and I checked out the hand painted design, my worry was that it would fade or wash out quickly.  I actually had somebody ask me if I could wash it which made me laugh because, well, it’s a diaper, of course I can wash it.  The single row of snaps make it very easy for daddy’s or caregivers to use. The diaper is very trim when on which I LOVE!  It is narrow between the legs which is another plus in our opinion.  The 3 rows of rise snaps allow for a good range of fit.  The insert has done well by us and I’m not afraid to use it when we go out and about.  I almost always pack this diaper in the diaper bag. Washing is simple, unstuff and wash.  Because the insert is different than so many others, it’s easy to pick out of the basket when I’m stuffing diapers. At $19.00, for a hand painted diaper that has held up with no signs of wear, I like the price.  The diaper looks great!  Made with a suede cloth inner and matching tabs for contrast, I love the look.  The wings are rounded instead of square like many diapers. Most of all, I love the Green Bay Packers logo.  I haven’t had a suede cloth diaper before, but I like that it doesn’t stain as easily.  Because the diaper is trim, it is a little harder to stuff the insert in.  The pocket opening is plenty big, but when stuffing it between the leg area, it is pretty tight.  From our use of the diaper, that is the only downfall, but I will take it for the trimness.  Fitting jeans over his little fluffy tush isn’t always easy. Check out some of the hand painted custom diapers on Rachel Beth’s Cloth Creations Facebook page and see how they hold up after hundreds of washes. Buy it:  Get your own custom hand painted diaper from Rachel Beth’s Cloth Creations now!Win it:   Rachel has offered one lucky reader $15 store credit for any in stock item.  What would you get on your custom hand painted diaper? *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned product for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are my own and only influenced by my experience with the product and […]

A Christmas Gift Idea for the Little Adventurer in Your Life #MPMHGG

[…]is in the bag stays in and doest leak out.  Charlie left his water bottle partly opened and some of the water got dumped inside, but the outside of the bag was still dry.  Not only that, but it makes an adorable mouth.  See? And, because kids lose things, there is a spot on the inside to write ID information on. Have I mentioned that it is adorable?  With the fins and markings to give it a realistic look, Charlie just looks so cute carrying his PaddlePak around.   Hidden in some of the fins and markings are 2 accessories loops, one on each side.  The bottom fin is actually a dry zip pocket for those little treasures that my 2 year old always seems to find. On the back of this backpack, there are reflective strips on the straps for that added safety.  Just under one of those strips is a spot for your little one to hang their sunglasses – a must have if they will be taking this on all of those trips to the beach.  The back of the backpack itself is made with a padded mesh.  The straps are adjustable too, so Charlie will be able to keep wearing this backpack for quite a few years.  You will also find a hook for hanging the backpack up when not in use. Charlie absolutely loves his PaddlePak and fills it up every time that we head out somewhere.  I love that because then they are a little more responsible with their things.  Him and “Spike” are buddies now.  You have to check out the rest of the PaddlePak backpacks.  All of them are adorable, but I’m thinking it’s a good thing we didn’t get fin or Charlie would be chasing me around trying to bite me all day long! Feeling social?  Visit Trunk on Facebook or Pinterest today! Where will your little adventurer take the PaddlePak?   Want a chance to win?  One reader will win a Toybox, Yondi and PaddlePak.  Giveaway ends at 11:59 pm EST on November 21, 2014.  Open to US only.  Good luck!   a Rafflecopter […]

Truth Becomes Her – The Adventures of Rooney Cruz Ringleaders Review

[…]on the front page all the way through to the bible verses and illustrations at the end of the book! RINGLEADERS is a nine chapter book that is more like two stories in one. Join Rooney as she auditions for a play that she is excited about and her journey through this experience. But – go beyond that as her angel Mari pops up to take Rooney on adventures through the Bible. Adventures with women of the Bible whose story relates to Rooney and a situation she is facing. You will see Rooney peer through windows into the past, windows that help her to “meet” women from the Bible and learn about their journey and struggles.  You can almost feel Rooney’s emotions as you “hear” their story told by Mari.  Then, you can read on as Rooney recognizes how even if her situation feels difficult, that if Elizabeth, or Mary or any of the other women from the Bible could face these situations and be okay, that she would also be okay.  She will fold her hands and pray throughout the chapters.  There are colorful pages with bible verses that are perfect for your young girls to memorize.   I love how Rooney takes these situations and applies them to her life and her situation.  It helps my daughter to recognize how facing a difficult situation isn’t impossible but takes faith and trust in God.  The absolute ONLY downside to these books is that my daughter is getting too old for them!  Not for the message necessarily, but for the length of the stories.  She is a great reader and whipped through the stories quickly.  Having said that – I will be ordering some more of the other Bible Belles stories for her to read.   I really love that as part of the review for this book, we also received the Ringleaders Coloring Book, Ringleaders: A Devotional for Girls and the Ringleaders Journal for Mothers and Daughters.  We haven’t used the coloring book much yet, but as it turns out, last night, my cousin was here with her 1 1/2 year old and Maggie read her part of the story and turned to a matching page in the coloring book and let her color it.   The Devotional is amazing {and the timing was perfect – we just finished up her last devotional}.  Each lesson has a few paragraphs to read, some Bible verses to read and questions or activities to answer or do and prayers.  The devotional is broken down into chapters to go along with the RINGLEADERS book. The RINGLEADERS Journal for Mothers and Daughters is also awesome and something I have looked for for awhile.  Since this journal goes along with the story, it is broken down by the women from the Bible that Rooney learns about in the story.  You will read and study about Elizabeth, Mary, The Samaritan Woman, Mary and Martha and Mary Magdalene.  The pages alternate with space for mom to answer and space for the daughter to answer.  They are clearly marked mother and daughter.  They ask questions like what I love most about the story, favorite part of her story, draw a scene you liked from the story.  Talk about why that person’s story is important and a time when it applies to your life.  Space to write about how God works in your life, free space and pages to answer together – these are my favorite!   Okay, I had a lot to say!  You guys, I highly recommend these books for your young girls.  Amazing stories about good choices and ways to follow and live a life God wants for you.  You can read more reviews about the RINGLEADERS books. Cloth diapers for the bigger kid #summersweeping

[…]help pass the time while her husband was deployed.  She does most of her sewing in the wee hours of the night while the kids are sleeping.  The Battle Buddies family is currently in Ft. Hood, but will be heading to Germany this fall.  They try to live with as small of a carbon footprint as possible with their large {by today’s standards} family.  When she isn’t sewing, she enjoys hanging out with family, visiting parks and zoos, and family movie nights.     I originally received the old style Battle Buddies diaper, and it was working great!  Since getting that diaper, Erica has improved her hybrid fitted diapers and sent me a new one to review.  Here are the details on this new, improved diaper.   The diaper is made using heavy bamboo.  The outer layer is made of a gorgeous knit print, then, a hidden layer of windpro, and the inside is cotton velour.  There are 2 inserts included – a fold-over, contoured insert consisting of 2 layers of heavy bamboo fleece topped with a layer of cotton velour.  The second is a booster that consists of 2 layers of heavy bamboo fleece topped with a layer of cotton velour.  Used all together, there are 9 layers of absorbency in the inserts. With this diaper, there are 12 snaps across the front of the diaper, and 3 snaps on each wing.  The diaper does allow for crossover snaps, so even if you have a small waisted little one, you can get a great fit.  Plus, if you are a bit picky like me, you like your snaps to be on a certain side.  No matter which side you prefer, these snaps are the right way.  The crossover snaps can go either way! The back elastic and leg elastic is very gentle on babies skin, and allows for a snug fit that doesn’t allow any of their business to escape. Each diaper is handmade in the USA.  The one size diaper fits from 12-35 pounds, the OSXL from 25-45+ pounds, and the little buddies fit from 8-22 pounds.  What makes these diapers one size is the fold down rise {not on the the second diaper we received}.   We have been using this diaper about every other day to give it as much of a workout as we can.  FIrst of all, the print is gorgeous.  I love the bright, fun print on this diaper.   Because of the many layers of this diaper, it is bulky, but also very absorbent.  We have used it for two different uses – overnight, and during the day without a cover, after all, who wants to cover up that cute fluffy butt?  We have had zero leaks with this diaper.  I have found that the cover that best fits over this diaper, out of what we own, are our Thirsties cover and our Rearz cover.   I love hybrid fitted diapers, they are my new favorites.  I have heard many moms searching for a diaper to fit their larger toddlers.  Well folks, here it is!  Battle Buddies may be the answer to keeping your larger kiddos dry through the night.  Visit Battle Buddies on Facebook and check out more of her gorgeous creations.  The one size diapers are $30, XL one size are $35, newborn diapers are $25, and little buddies are $28.  Check out the stocking on Hyena Cart or Wild World of Fluff.   Win one from August 1-15th.   What is your favorite diaper from Battle […]

Friendly Debates With The Danielle’s – Easter Bunny

[…]and we are burning them.  I know Maggie doesn’t understand that now, but along with the lesson of the day, I know when she is older, she will be able to actively see what is going on, not just hear about it.     What’s up peeps? First time dying eggs….or trying to eat the newspaper anyways.     For Easter, our family gets together after church and we have an egg hunt for all of the kids (and sometimes the adults).  Maggie is the youngest of 8 grandkids, and this year I am really excited to see her find the eggs.  We are getting together tomorrow to dye our eggs.  The Easter Bunny leaves an Easter basket “hidden” at our house, and at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, everybody gets an Easter basket.  Once you are an adult with a significant other, you get one to share, but the kids always get their own.  Sam, who is the oldest of the grandkids, couldn’t find her basket one year.  The Easter Bunny hid it so well and couldn’t remember where.  We all searched and searched and never found it.  At least she was a teenager and old enough to laugh about it.  We did find the basket eventually…..that year at Christmas when we needed the huge kettle to cook dinner.  Last year, the adults got a new kind of treat in our baskets:  tickets to the raceway park.  Most of us used them at once as a family gathering to go to the races.  It was pretty fun 🙂  The year before, we got gift cards to go golfing.  We haven’t all used them because we keep trying to plan a date for all of us to go together.    We have a big dinner and stuff ourselves, then we play games.  Depending on the weather, that may be volleyball.      Liking the Harley Davidson Easter Bunny Easter basket from Grandma Jamie Easter basket from Mom and Dad Easter basket from Grandma Nancy and Grandpa Ron   Pictures from this years Egg Hunt.  Maybe tomorrow I will be ambitious and add the pictures from dying eggs….probably not.     Sharing her rock with the Easter Bunny Hmm…how do I get to the […]

Lovely Pocket Diaper Rave *Review and Giveaway*

[…]and the back of this diaper.  Because they are waterproof, that helps prevent wicking because all of the material is tucked away, and what isn’t is waterproof!  The back of the diaper is gathered in the middle (see pictures).  At first I thought that it would make it uncomfortable for the little ones, but instead it creates a nice snug fit on their back so there won’t be any up the back incidents!  Plus, because of the way it is gathered, when you take it off, it creates a wide opening to pull the insert out.  I have forgotten to take the insert out before, and it often agitates itself out.  I do wish it was a snap in insert – I have become quite spoiled with some of my diapers having the option to snap in. The outer shell of the diaper is silky smooth with the waterproof polyurethane laminate (PUL) on the inside.  The inner material on the diaper is made of super soft microsuede which won’t pill.  Plus, the stay dry fabric keeps baby’s tush dry and helps prevent diaper rashes from moisture on their little tush.    We haven’t had any leaks with our Rave, on either of the kiddos.  We were able to get a great fit every time!  I am however, not a big fan of microfiber inserts, I prefer bamboo, and lucky for me, I can purchase some bamboo inserts from Lovely Pocket Diapers!  And at only $12.00 for solids and $12.50 for prints, they are very affordable.  If you are looking for a cloth diaper that you can afford to build your stash out of, these are a great option. Color Mixing Fun

[…]post may contain affiliate links.* It is no secret that I love Learning Resources.  They are some of the most popular toys for the kids, and the latest is no exception.  In fact, this might be one of MY favorite toys to pull out.  I know I picked it out online, but it is a million times cooler than I thought it would be.  What am I talking about?  The primary science color mixing set.  It comes complete with a variety of different activities to keep the little ones interested.  Here is what is included: Customizable kaleidoscope with color chips Spinning top with interchangeable color mixing discs 6 piece translucent color wheel Color mixing glasses with 6 lenses 3 test tubes with lids and a dropper with stand 10 activity cards and a guide   It arrived during nap time, but when the kids woke up, they just had to get their hands on all of it.  We sat down at the table with it, minus the test tubes because I wasn’t going to be supervising at the moment.  Maggie sat there changing the lenses in the color mixing glass over and over.  She loves them and they are one of her favorite parts of this kit.  They are so simple to use, and even if the kids are bending the glasses the WRONG way, they don’t break.  Putting the colors in is easy for them because there is a little part on each one that they can grab onto to insert them. Charlie’s favorite part {at first} was to just play with the color wheel.  But then, the next morning, we took out the test tubes.  That’s when I knew this had quickly become their favorite thing to do. I filled two of the test tubes with water, added yellow food coloring to one, and blue to the other.  Then, I let the kids take turns using the dropper to add the two colors to the middle test tube and see what color they made.  Then, we repeated the experiment mixing red and yellow, and again with red and blue.  After just doing each set of colors one time, Maggie can now tell me what colors they make when mixing colors.  They love choosing the colors to put in the test tubes, and then seeing what it makes.  We also did the activity from one of the cards using paper towels to turn the water in the center test tube a different color.  They liked it, but had trouble being patient enough for it.  You can see in the pictures just how much they were each concentrating as they mixed the colors together.  This part is by far their favorite and they would do this every day if I let them. The spinning top is fun for them to use, changing out different color cards to see what colors it makes when it is spinning.  They don’t seem to care that they have some trouble getting the top to spin on their own and just keep trying. They are so cute when I ask what color something makes when it is mixed together.  Maggie knows a lot of them, but Charlie is so cute as he attempts to find those two colors, put them together and look through them. The kaleidoscope is pretty awesome.  Not only does it contain color chips you can change out, but you can add in other things to experiment and see what happens with them. I love the activity cards, because sometimes, I’m too tired to think and they need a little structure.  Letting them pick out the activity they want to do makes it more fun for all of us. Buy it:  RIght now you can get FREE shipping on orders of $30 +. Win it:  One lucky reader will win a Primary Science Color Mixing Set of their own.  Open to US only.  Ends at 11:59 pm EST on April 19, 2014.  Good luck! My new favorite cloth diaper! {Poppy Fields} #switchtocloth

[…]Poppy Fields – a fitted, are you surprised?  No, didn’t think so. Plus, I now own some more of the world’s cutest diapers!  Okay, I know, on with the show, are you excited yet? Poppy Fields started when Samantha and Mike had their first of two baby boys.  Like many other parents, they wanted to reduce the chemicals and toxins their little guys came in contact with and decided to use cloth diapers.  There begins their love affair (with cloth diapers).  When they started using cloth, fitted diapers were what worked best for them and they began to sew their own.  From there, they started making their own skin care products as well.  All of their products are handcrafted in California using only the finest materials and ingredients.  Plus, they offer a no hassle return or replace policy – isn’t that awesome?!  Okay, so onto the good stuff, the diaper.  We received two diapers to test out on my little monkeys.  The Raccoon print and the Owls print.  Maggie loves the prints too and will tell me which diaper is hers and which is Charlie’s.  Now, I really really want the Pirate print!  Diaper construction  Style:  Fitted diaper Sizing:  5 different size options.  Newborn, Small, Medium, Medium Long, Large Manufactured:  California (USA) Closures:  Snaps, 3 snaps on each wing, 12 across front in one row, crossover snaps Exterior:  Cotton knit (1) Interior:  Natural colored organic cotton velour (3) Hidden layers:  Organic cotton fleece (2) Soakers:  2 Snap in doublers made from organic cotton velour and organic bamboo fleece for a total of 6 layers in the soakers (4) Approximate value:  $34.50 Diaper duty This diaper is so easy to use!  Even daddy loves it.  His first time using this diaper, he said, “Wow, I really like this diaper.  It’s super soft, and stretchy.  Plus, with only one row of snaps, it is fast and simple to put on the little squiggly babies.  The stretch makes getting that fit around the bellies easy.  If you have that baby that is super skinny but a bit older, this diaper will fit great because the waist can get so small.  The elastic around the legs and back is gentle and provides a great fit with no red marks.  We haven’t had a single leak with this diaper.  Charlie and Maggie can wear it overnight with no problems.  The 9 layers of fabric provide a ton of absorption.  Even without a cover, they hold up well, although they require a cover to be completely waterproof. Because the inserts snap in, I never have to waist time looking for the soakers when the laundry is done.  Because the soakers are sewn together at one end, that part takes a little bit longer to dry, so I usually hang it up when I take the rest of the laundry out of the dryer. The diaper is made of high quality materials and I have no doubt that it will hold up for all of our children.  With two in diapers, we were washing diapers daily, and these haven’t faded a bit.  The colors are still vibrant.  *One of the diapers we received had a snap broken.  I contacted Poppy Fields, and not only were they very apologetic for the problem, they worked so quickly to get it replaced.  Quick, as in minutes.  They even sent a shipping label to use to return the diaper and sent out a replacement immediately.  There customer service is absolutely fantastic and you can see that they work very hard to make sure every customer is satisfied.* Have I mentioned these diapers are so stinking adorable?  I am absolutely in love with both of the prints we own and really want to get some more of these.  Since having Charlie, we have been working on updating our boy stash, and sometimes, finding boy prints you love can be difficult, but with Poppy Fields, we have a ton of options.  I also love how the serged edges and buttons are in coordinating colors to match the diaper.  So, at $34.50 are they worth it?  I think so.  While it is a bit more than many of my other fitted diapers, they are fantastic diapers, adorable, and the customer service is fabulous.  I would recommend these diapers to any mama out there. Get your own Poppy Fields Fitted diapers now, or check out the other eco friendly products they carry for bathtime, sleepytime, or playtime.   Be sure to visit Poppy Fields on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest and greatest. Want to win one?  Samantha and Mike have generously offered to give one of you lucky readers a Poppy Fields fitted diaper of your own as part of the Switch to Cloth giveaway!   Check out Poppy Fields shop and let me know, what is your favorite print?  What is your favorite feature about this diaper?  *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned products for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are 100% my own and only influenced by my experiences with the product and company and may differ from […]

Homeschool Energy Science Unit

[…]the kids the opportunity for free play on them or some directed activities so they can get an idea of what they are doing before trying their own thing. There are some great experiments in the curriculum but if you forgo that, we also used experiments from the Usborne Science Encyclopedia.  We also watched the Magic School Bus episode Getting Energized on Netflix.   Two of our favorite books that we read during our energy unit were Wired and Electrical Wizard:  How Nikola Tesla Lit Up The World.  We read Wired over and over and over.  It’s a fantastic book that takes you on the journey of electricity and how it gets to your house.  These are just our favorite books that we read, but we got a large stack from the library that covered topics like solar energy, wind energy, water energy and so much more.   We also got a solar powered building set . The kids were trying to really get the light in there and used a bulb that melted it so we never actually got our solar powered thing to go…so maybe we will redo that idea.   Between the books, video and hands-on activities, energy was one of our favorite science units to learn about. Generally, I find card or board games to go along with our units, but this time, I didn’t add one in.  If you haven’t done an energy unit, it’s a fun one.  If you have – I’d love to hear your family’s favorite ways that you have learned about it – books, games, activities, […]

How to Make a Homemade Treasure Chest in 10 Easy Steps

[…]3 or 4 at the time just burst into tears.  It was hilarious, and Jamey quickly gave her some of the eggs, so all was right in the world.  Everybody else was laughing.  The adults usually help find eggs because there is a giant egg hidden somewhere with money in it and everybody wants that one.   This year, Easter will be a lot different for us.  The folks have retired and are still in Florida.  I figured it was up to me to round up the whole gang for Easter.  I was so excited, and then a little bummed that only about half of the usual crew will be here.  But, I am super excited that this much of our group will be together.  For the last few years, I have helped to hide the Easter eggs, so I’m pretty use to that now.  I’m still getting use to hiding the Easter baskets for our kids though.  You would think after 4 years that I would be use to it by now.  I’ve been thinking about Easter for well over a month now because it is so much fun. I like to find new, creative ideas and watch them come to life.  This time, I thought a DIY Treasure Chest Easter Basket would be fun.  I decided to fill it with Disney Junior things.  The kids absolutely love watching Disney Junior, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins are some of their favorites. As soon as the idea hit me, I realized I could make the entire thing from stuff we probably have laying around.  I happened to be headed to Walmart as I was thinking about it, so I picked up some things to fill it with.  To start with, you can’t have a treasure chest without treasure, right? I knew I wanted some chocolate gold coins and some colored gems but I wasn’t sure what else  I wanted to include but I figured it out as soon as I hit up the Easter aisle.   Ta-da!  While I had been thinking a pirate theme, I saw this Doc McStuffins doctor bag and a Doc McStuffins light-up yo-yo.  The kids love all things Disney Junior, so I knew they would really love them.  I also got a coloring book, stickers, pirate sword, deck of playing cards and a few little Jake and the Neverland Pirates figures.  The kids are going to love it and it was so much fun to make. Now, off to find the perfect spot to hide their Disney Junior Easter Basket Treasure Chest.  Here are some pictures of how we made it.  If I were to ever make it again, I think I would skip the paper bags and just use the gold duct tape.  It looks so much nicer than just the paper bags.  I had fun hot gluing the pennies onto it.  Plus, because of all of the duct tape I used on it, I think it will be pretty durable, which is great.  We will be adding it to our dress up center after Easter.  Here is how I made it.   What are your holiday traditions?  Do you, ahem, I mean, the Easter bunny hide Easter baskets or Easter eggs?  I’d love to hear some of your traditions or favorite Easter memories. Week in review: And what a week it was!

[…]shower for Rachel and baby Taylor.  So much fun, I can’t wait to write that post and share all of the fun with you.  We had lots of fun, but boy were we exhausted! Sunday, was the craziest of days.  We started out with Taylor’s baptism – she looked so precious in her little gown.  Then, back to our house where the eggs were hiddenThe photographer arrived and we took a huge family photo – yes, I will be sharing those, but I don’t have them yet.  Here’s a shot of one that I have so far.  We did the large group, the grandchildren with grandma and grandpa, grandparents with the great grandchild, sisters, brother and sister, all the kids, each individual family, this person, that person, crazy shots that show just how entertaining my family is.  Even the photographer was laughing.  We all had fun.  So did the dogs, who were outside eating the hard boiled eggs.  Hehe.  Our day doesn’t end, if you haven’t figured it out yet, we decided to celebrate Easter as well since Rachel was here from California and the entire gang of I believe 25 was together.  Since one family member is an accountant, the less time she takes from work right now, the better.  Guess what else, we played cards!  We do that a lot.  I love getting together. Then we had lunch together on Monday.  Oh yeah, I forgot a small detail.  Friday night, our washing machine broke.  A pain anyways, but a big inconvenience when you use cloth diapers!  So, then we went and bought a new washing machine.  Get home, and wouldn’t you know it, after 3 days of messing with it, the washing machine drained and spun.  Oh well.  It’s been replaced. A few quiet days, or not so quiet since I had a very whiny little girl and a super clingy little man.  Today as it turned out, Maggie woke up looking like a zombie.  She had a slight fever a few nights ago, but it went away.  The next morning, diarrhea just once.  Today, zombie.  She was so out of it, I called the doctor today since our clinic doesn’t have a pediatrician on Fridays.  Took her in because the doctor thought our explanation of all of the symptoms warranted a closer look.  After making the appointment, Maggie threw up all over me.  Awesome, right?  My poor little girl.  She’s in one arm, Charlie is in the other.  It could have been a bigger disaster, but we contained the mess.  Then, she was like normal almost.  Running around, chatting, so cute.  Before that, she wouldn’t talk and stared off into space.  She had diarrhea two more times, then it was time to go to the doctor. {Now, the PLAN for today was to go to get the kids’ pictures taken with bunnies, have my sister, her hubs and the baby come back from Wisconsin, another friend and her hubs and two kids all over for homemade potato soup.  Not what happened.} At the doctor, they check her for strep throat – I was going to ask them too, so I’m glad they did it anyways.  We are generally on the same page – love her pediatrician!  After the symptoms, and examining Maggie, she determines she has a GI infection, at least I think that’s what she said – I call it a stomach bug.  Test comes back positive for strep.  Super.  Okay, please, test Charlie while we are here.  *Praying for a negative result*  Nope, positive as well.  Great!  Please little man, don’t be allergic to the medicine like your sister.  Get home after picking up the medicine, he’s got the stomach bug too.  Awesome! This weekends plans, changed.  A friend and her family were coming in tomorrow from out of town, but now, they aren’t.  My sister, stayed some place else.  Our dinner plans for tonight?  They stayed home as well.  A few days of R & R for us it looks like.  Getting the bunny pictures taken on Saturday morning. More good stuff though, John found a baby grand piano for free on Craigslist.  I finally have a baby grand like I have always dreamed of!  Soon enough, we will sand and stain and it will look even more fabulous! Here’s to hoping for a better week ahead!  And quick healing for my sweet little babies.  It just breaks my heart when they aren’t feeling well. White Chocolate Strawberry Fudge Recipe

[…]is still recovering and I know it’s taking a toll on them.  They are far away from the rest of the family right now and it was tough on all of us not being there with them.  I am so excited to send them a gift to cheer them up.  Plus, as usual, I am using a mason jar to gift wrap them.  It’s kind of my thing these days. I am not stopping with just the fudge though.  Last year we sent them a heart button collage and this year we are also sending love this Valentine’s Day with the DOVE® Valentine’s Day tin and an American Greetings® Valentine’s Day greeting card.  I am hoping to get another project made for them for Valentine’s Day but since I can sometimes be a procrastinator, we will see if it really gets done in time to mail to them or not.  In the meantime, I have to keep John from eating all of the fudge.  Or me.  I might just eat it all.  Know why?  Because the surprise ingredient is so freaking delicious! Alright – here we go. White Chocolate Strawberry Fudge INGREDIENTS 2 Cans of sweetened condensed milk Bag of white chocolate melting wafers or white chocolate chips Container of strawberry frosting 1 tsp + 1 tsp Vanilla extract {I wanted to use strawberry extract but I couldn’t find it locally} M&M’s® Strawberry – you only need one, but go ahead and buy more because you’ll eat some just for fun.  Serious – YUM.   Valentine’s sprinkles {optional} Parchment paper To begin with, line a pan with parchment paper.  I used a 13 x 9 pan with edges on it.  You can use a smaller pan for thicker fudge but since I’m layering mine, this worked perfectly. Spread some M&M’s® Strawberry around on top of the parchment paper. In a microwave safe bowl, mix  3 cups of white chocolate wafers or chips, can of sweetened condensed milk and Vanilla extract.  Begin with 1 minute and then stir.  Continue in 30-second increments until fully melted and smooth.  Pour over M&M”s® Strawberry on parchment paper.  Spread it around {it will melt some of the M&M”S® but that is alright}. Now, you can use the same bowl unless you like to do dishes.  Repeat the melting process using the second can of sweetened condensed milk, 3 cups of white chocolate wafers, container of strawberry frosting and teaspoon of vanilla.  Pour this on top of the white chocolate mixture.  Add more M&M’s® Strawberry by sprinkling them around on top.  If you are feeling wild and crazy, go ahead and add some Valentine’s Day sprinkles to it before it hardens. Let cool.  Then, devour.  Or don’t, because it’s a gift, remember?  It’s okay, it really does make quite a bit.  Did I mention – YUM!  We cut ours into heart shapes using cookie cutters. My aunt and uncle aren’t the only ones that I am gifting fudge to this year so I wanted to make a little something else.  I whipped up a batch of white chocolate Dove® cupcakes with strawberry frosting using some of the chocolates from the DOVE® Valentine’s Day tin since I bought two.    Yes, the melted DOVE® in the center of these was amazing.  We finished our gifts off with some American Greetings® Valentine’s Day greeting cards and our gifts were just about finished.  Now, to package up our fudge.   I know there are tons of ways to store your goodies but when I’m gifting food, I want it to be pretty.  I used a few scraps of pink and white fabric and placed it between the lid and the ring of the canning jar.  I had some pink and white twine that I tied around the top of the jar and then taped on 3 different sized paper hearts.  Each jar only took a minute or two to make and they look super adorable.  I’m thinking that I should personalize the top of each jar with the name of who is receiving it, what do you think? I hope you enjoy this homemade white chocolate strawberry fudge recipe as much as we have.  I’d love to hear your favorite Valentine’s Day gift ideas.  Looking for some other ideas?  Here are more Valentine’s Day recipes. Sponsor Spotlight: Awesome Blossom *Review*

[…]of my fabulous Mother’s Day sponsors  Sue from Awesome Blossom was kind enough to send me one of their diapers in Fantastic Yellow!  What a vibrant happy color and I am excited to share my experience with this diaper with all of you! About Awesome Blossom Awesome Blossom Diapers is a WAHM operated business located in the U. S. and the Awesome diapers are fairly made in China.  The handmade fitted diapers and trainers are made by The Eli Monster company which is a WAHM owned company based in the USA. They ship incredibly fast!   About the Diaper The Awesome Blossom diaper fits from 9-35+ pounds.  Every diaper comes with one insert made from 3 layers of microfiber terry cloth.   Awesome Blossom diapers are made with 100 % polyester knit exterior with a thin, flexible waterproof polyurethane laminate on the inside (PUL).  This hidden waterproof film keeps moisture from leaking out, yet still allows air flow to baby’s skin and allows the fabric to feel nice and soft on the outside.   The inside of  the diapers are lined with soft fleece, which is gentle against baby’s skin and feels dry since moisture is pulled through into the pocket by the microfiber inserts.  With the 2 layers of snaps to adjust the size in the waist and legs, it’s easy to get the perfect fit on these diapers.  The extra crossover snaps help with an extra small fitting for those tiny little waists.  With 3 rows of snaps, there is lots of room to grow in these diapers.   Smallest setting Largest setting My Experience with Awesome Blossom DiapersI immediately loved this diaper because of the vibrant yellow color!  It is a great neutral color that both of our babes will be able to wear proudly.   I really like the four snap options to get the right fit on the legs. I also really like the crossover tabs for two reasons.  One – if you are out and about and can’t shake the stinkies into the toilet, you can wrap the diaper up tight and not get a fun surprise when you dig it out of the wetbag later.  Two, it fits tiny little waists better because it can get a more snug fit.  Such a great fit!  This is probably the only time she has just sat there so I could take pictures! The leg holes on this diaper do get small enough that I think they would be able to stay tight around a smaller babies legs.   The elastic on the Awesome Blossom is very gentle.  The pocket opening in the back of the diaper is somewhat small, but the elastic expands very easily and I had no trouble stuffing this diaper at all.  The elastic at the back of the opening also keeps the insert in place so that the stinkies don’t get on it.   I really like the PUL on this diaper – it’s softer and stretchier than many diapers I have used. We were able to get a great fit the first time and every time.  There are some diapers I have used where it takes a few tries to get the right fit, but not this one.  This combined with the soft fleece on the inside make this diaper very lightweight and very breathable.  What I would change I know I say this a lot, but I wish it came with a bamboo insert, but that is a personal preference.  I just love bamboo!  Awesome blossom diapers only come in snaps, which is great with me, but may be a problem for some people. The tabs do tend to curl up when she is wearing the diaper sometimes.  This doesn’t affect the use or effectiveness of the diaper, just something I noticed. I would definitely recommend this diaper to anybody!  Not only is this a fantastic diaper, but the price is very affordable.  They can also be purchased in packs with color coordinated diapers or in multi packs of 12, 24, or 36.   Contact  Visit Their WebsiteFind them on Facebook Follow them on Twitter Do you want to own an Awesome Blossom Diaper? Buy it now Win it on my blog starting May 1st!   *I received this diaper free of charge for the purpose of a review.  All opinions on this diaper are 100 % my […]

DIY Greeting Card Organizer

[…]of white down to 12 x 8, folding it in half to measure 12 x 4.  I glued that onto the bottom of the solid page. I then used some brads or eyelets to close up the outer side of the 12 x 4 page. Using the FREE printables below, you can print out this lined paper to write birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, and holidays.  Trim each party down to the size you want.  I made them 8 x 5.  Glue these onto your page. Using the other FREE printable, print out the month tags.  I trimmed these down to 3.5 x 2.  Glue these onto your page. Depending on the scrapbook you are using, you need to measure where to punch the 3 holes along the left side of the page.   Repeat this process for each of the 12 months.  Now, go ahead and fill out birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or any other dates to remember.  Attach them to the scrapbook or binder. Now is the fun part.  Head out to Walmart and stock up on Hallmark greeting cards.  John and I both have large families, so we stocked up on a ton of birthday cards.  I also picked out some birthday cards for the kids in our families.  I saw some ©2015 MARVEL Avengers  kids birthday cards that I knew I had to put in the cart.  Charlie loved them and he said that we absolutely had to pick up some matching  wrapping paper for his presents.   10 years ago I started this project. When the World is Your Classroom, Cleaning Up Can Wait

[…]when the world is your classroom, cleaning up can wait.  Dirty hands and faces are just part of the fun.  No way will I be working inside.  I’m doing spring cleaning my way.   I have a confession to share with you.  I am kind of a germaphobe.  I never use to be, but then I had my 2nd baby and things changed.  Now having 3, and one born during the sick season, I make sure I am prepared.  When we showed up at the park, the germaphobe in me just cringed.  As we were getting out of our truck, there was this little boy playing, coughing that gross, wet, full of germs cough, and wiping his really runny nose.  All I could think was, “Thank goodness for our PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes.“ Not long ago when I was walking through Walmart, I took a shortcut through the household cleaning aisle, something caught my eye.  The PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes available in both a 35 count fragrance free canister and a 70 count clean refreshing scent canister.  These were perfect for both our house and for our summer car kit.   Maggie and Charlie absolutely adore their baby brother, but aren’t always great at remembering my rule that they must wash their hands with soap and water before they can touch him or hold him.  {I told you, I’m a germaphobe now}.  Now I can keep the 70 count PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes out next to the pack-n- play and they do a much better job.  They may not always run to the bathroom to wash, but that is alright because these wipes sanitize hands, killing illness causing bacteria.  Can I get a woo-hoo!  {I’m listening}.   Since we like to hit up the zoo, parks, the beach, or any other number of places while the weather is nice, we always keep a car kit packed.  The 35 count PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes fit perfect into our kit, along with our band-aids, sunscreen, and no more ouch spray.  So, when we got to the park, out came our car kit and I am so glad we added these wipes to it.   Like I said, when the snow melts, that means mud.  See these dirty little fingers?  Not to mention all of the millions of germs they are grabbing onto on the playground as they climb, slide, jump and fall, or the dogs they were playing with.  They were having a blast, even though we may have planned for the coldest of the days in the last few weeks.  But now that we had all of those grubby hands, I also had 4 kids who were starving!  It was definitely time to break out our PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes and get them cleaned up and germ free before they dig in.  The best part is, these are so handy that the kids can wash their own hands AND their faces.   These aren’t just for kids though.  When you go to a park with no bathrooms {seriously, who builds a park with no bathrooms?}, mom cleans up the mess and has a quick and easy way to wash her hands.   Now I know you are wondering how you have lived without these for so long, so get your money saving coupon and keep some in your house, your car, your office, anywhere.  Plus, just knowing how many of these we will undoubtedly go through, I love that the Purell loyalty program can earn us coupons, gift cards and products.  Check out this video of the fun we had at the park. Choosing a one size diaper for newborns + Rarpz review

[…]available in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Australia, and the US.  If you don’t want to buy some of these diapers after checking them out, you will as soon as you talk to Emma.  She is super nice and it’s been a great pleasure to work with her.   Emma sent us 3 different pocket cloth diapers for review.  I love the 3 she chose because it gives me an idea of the different diaper options she makes.  We received the Rockstar PUL nappy in snaps, the Star Gazer Glow in the Dark Character minky nappy, and the aqua velcro nappy.  You have to check out the creature nappies too, because the shark pup is one that I would love to add to my stash!   Each of the diapers fits from approximate 7 1/2 pounds to 37 1/2 pounds, making this a great one size cloth diaper.  The diapers have 3 rise settings, small, medium and large. As you can see in these pictures, the Rarpz, on the smallest setting, is about the same size as a Swaddlebees Simplex newborn diaper which fits around 6 pounds, so I think the Rarpz could possibly fit smaller as well. Here are pictures of the Rarpz diaper next to the Swaddlebees Simplex newborn, as well as next to a Rumparooz Lil’ Joey.  And, check out the fit on a newborn, courtesy of my friend Heather at  Mommy’s Favorite Things.  While I know that minky diapers are, by nature of the fabric, bulkier than non-minky diapers, the diaper still gets a great fit.  I’d love to have a shot of a newborn in a non-minky diaper just to see how trim it fits. With one row of 10 snaps across the front, and two snaps on each wing, you can easily adjust the waist size of the diaper.  There is also one crossover snap on the snap diapers.  The velcro Rarpz diapers feature a solid row of velcro across the front of the diaper, and then a tab of velcro on each wing.  The velcro on the wings allows for a crossover waist as well, by placing one side on top of the other. Because velcro can wreak havoc on laundry, Rarpz diapers have laundry tabs.  Laundry tabs are spots where you can stick the velcro wings when washing so they don’t hook up to your other diapers.  I like the velcro on this diaper because of the wide velcro strip across the front.  Plus, there is enough space between the top of the velcro and the top of the diaper, so it doesn’t rub against baby while he is moving around.   With elastic at both the legs and the back, you will get a snug, comfortable fit on baby. The rockstar and the aqua diapers are both made with a breathable, waterproof outer.  The rockstar has a soft, buttery yellow micro fleece stay dry lining, and the aqua has a white micro fleece stay dry lining.  The star gazer diaper has a printed designer cotton outer, a lush lime outer space minky with a soft, baby blue micro fleece lining and a hidden waterproof layer. The minky diaper is a bit bigger than the non-minky diapers.  Not a lot larger, but enough that I notice it.  While the pocket opening is not the biggest I have encountered, I have found it to be plenty big to quickly stuff the insert without any problems.  The elastic is good and stretchy to fit your hand. The insert is a trifold bamboo.  I. Love. Bamboo.  Love!  This insert is made with double layered bamboo served together with multi-tonal green thread matching the Rarpz label.  These new bamboo trifolds are bigger than the old ones, measuring 14 x 14 stretched out  after washing.  {These will shrink upon the hot pre-wash prep as they are designed to do}. To use, fold the insert in thirds {hence the trifold}, then stuff into the pocket.  Bamboo is really absorbent, and these three layers have held up to even the biggest jobs.   I love our Rarpz diapers, and right now, they are 3 of the very few pocket diapers we are still using.  I love how trim they are.  When they first arrived, I was a bit worried about how long they would fit because they look smaller than many one size diapers, but Charlie is roughly 28 pounds and only on the medium setting with room to grow still.  I honestly have nothing bad to say about Rarpz cloth nappies.  I love them.   Check out Rarpz cloth diapers and let me know which one you love the most.  Then, hop on over here for your chance to win the Star Gazer diaper.  Ends February 6th.   Stay social with Rarpz:  Facebook – Twitter – Pinterest – Instagram   And seriously folks, check out her Facebook pictures.  Let me know your favorite diaper, from Facebook or the website.  I cannot make up my mind, they are all so flufftastic!     *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned diapers for the purpose of this review.  All thoughts and opinions are 100% my […]

Effortless Caramel Apple Pies Recipe

[…]the Keebler® Ready Crust® Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crusts would be a hit with the kids and get them in the kitchen helping mix up some goodness.  Let’s face it, if you are going to have pies, you need to have some Reddi-wip®, right?! The last thing I had to decide was what could we fill them with that the kids could do completely on their own.  I left that thought to rumble in my head while we shopped.  We ALWAYS have to pick up a gazillion containers of yogurt or I’m fairly sure we will all starve to death.  We always have our favorites but I couldn’t help but grab a few new flavors that are the perfect fall flavors AND would make the perfect filling for our tasty treats we were going to be making.  Dannon® Greek Yogurt; Oikos® Pumpkin Pie Greek Yogurt and Light & Fit® Greek Apple Pie Yogurt.  With the thought of caramel apples on my brain, I picked up some caramel and couldn’t wait to make these.   Since Friday was Maggie’s 5th birthday {what, seriously, how did this happen?}, that felt like the perfect time for a treat.  Now, we generally have tons of different types of yogurt in our house, but you will almost never see me eating greek yogurt, I am just not a fan.  Until now.  I’m serious here folks, the Light & Fit® Greek Apple Pie Yogurt is so delicious that I’m now converted.  Okay, I know you are now dying to know how to make these, so enough chit chat.   Here you go! Create a Busy Moms Happy Hour “Kit” + 5 Ways to Indulge Yourself

[…]would see me go to the bathroom, come in, tell me they were going to leave me alone, and go out of the bathroom, shut the door and play.  It didn’t go on for too long, but at least a few weeks and I quickly started stashing my book in the bathroom.  If they were going to bless me with some time alone, I was going to take it! Game on your phone.  If reading isn’t your thing, or even if it is, playing a game you like on your phone is a great quick break for you.  My game of choice is Candy Crush {I am on level 908 if you are wondering}.  If I can sneak a few minutes, I grab my phone and play a game or two. Puzzle.  If you have a spot that you can keep it set up to do a little at a time, a puzzle would be a great way to get some me time. TV.  Call me crazy, but when the kids are in bed, I cannot wait to sit down with a mommy treat and a TV show.  Most of the shows I love aren’t really appropriate for my kiddos, so that’s when I really get my mommy time.  Disrupted repeatedly by the baby and a 2 and 4 year old who wake up for whatever reason.  I never get a full hour to myself, so I watch recorded shows so I can skip over the commercials. Something to drink.  Or eat.  No matter what I really love to do, read, play games, do a puzzle, etc., if I can do it quietly enough, I will sneak a treat while the kids are in the other room.  Skinny Cow® treats are some of our favorites.  Whether it’s the iced coffee or the candy bars for my friend, or the crunch bars for me, it’s a little happy hour treat for myself every time.   How do you indulge yourself when you get some me time?  Do you spend that time hiding out in your bathroom or do you really treat yourself?  What Skinny Cow® treats are your […]

Take the “What is your diaper style” quiz {+review}

[…]for your caregivers needs, I am going to let you in on a secret.  One diaper could do all of these things! Yep, I said it, one diaper!  This fantastic diaper is perfect for mom’s, dad’s, and caregivers.  No remembering the right stash of diapers for grandma’s house.  This diaper is Funky Fluff. Funky Fluff is a Canadian company looking to make life a little easier for every cloth diapering parent.  Each Funky Fluff diaper is adjustable to be used as an all in one, all in two, or a pocket diaper.  This is really an awesome feature because life changes, and along with that, so do your diapering needs.  No more selling off your diapers because they are the wrong style now. We received the Funky Fluff Bamboo Cloth Diaper to review and it is one of the few pocket diapers we still use regularly.  Let me rephrase that….Funky Fluff is one of my very favorite diapers and one of the ones I reach for every time it is clean. While we use it mainly as an all in two diaper, it gives us options.  The double row of 10  snaps allows for a snug fit on any waist size, while the 3 snaps on each wing allow you to customize the fit and prevent wing droop.  While some diapers have the hip snap on top, the placement of this one {on the bottom} keeps the sides of the diaper in place no matter how much Charlie moves around. The snaps are an accent color to the diaper creating a funky colored belt around the waist.  We received the gray and blue diaper and I absolutely LOVE the colors.  Gray can be somewhat boring, but I love the way the blue accents it. The crossover snaps on the tabs allow the diaper to fit tiny waisted babies, as well as provide a convenient storage option when you are on the go.  There are 4 different rise settings on this diaper to fit a range of 7-35+ pounds. This diaper is soft, on the inside and the outside.  The breathable PUL makes the diaper waterproof while the bamboo makes it comfortable.  The elastic on the back and legs allows for a snug fit without leaving red marks and making baby uncomfortable. There are some features of a diaper that are worth their weight in gold.  One of those is double gussets.  If John had his way, we would ONLY own diapers with double gussets. Because the inserts can snap into both ends of the diaper, there is an extra layer of material to prevent the snaps from ripping.  Oooh, you heard me say it can snap on both ends?  It’s true.  There is a wide pocket opening on both the front and back of the diaper for easy stuffing of the inserts, or even more absorption if you need it.  There is also a waterproof strip at the front of the diaper to help with leaks, especially for tummy sleepers. The pocket openings have a flap over them to help keep the poop out of the pocket. All in one: To use this diaper as an all in one, snap the insert into both ends to secure it in place.  Because of the pocket style, you could easily add extra absorbency as well.  There is a flap over the pocket opening to keep poop from getting all over the insert. All in two: To use this diaper as an all in two, snap either one, or both of the inserts in, and lay them on top of the pocket. Pocket diaper: To use this diaper as a pocket diaper, snap the insert in and stuff it in the pocket.  Because it’s only attached at one end of the diaper and the insert will agitate out in the wash, requiring it to be stuffed after drying. As I’m sure you know, I really love bamboo, so I knew this was the option for me, but you can also get the Funky Fluff Stay Dry cloth diaper.  Having a boy, I have realized that there are 5, 304, 341 different shades of pinks.  There are no where near that many in more boyish colors.  Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t mind girly diapers on Charlie once in awhile, but I would love to have more fun colored diapers for boys, and Funky Fluff nailed that one.  So many of their colors are different than the everyday blues or greens.  We received the gray with blue snaps and I love it.  It’s fun, not boring! Each diaper comes with 2 inserts made with 80% bamboo viscose and 20% polyester.  A smaller soaker made from 4 layers of bamboo blend terry, and a heavy duty, super absorbent soaker made of 5 layers of bamboo blend terry.  The small insert works great on the extra small and small rise settings, as well as a booster for older babies or for overnight.  The great thing about the heavy duty soaker is that there is a crease line on it.  Simply fold it at the crease when using it for smaller babies.  The crease can be customized by putting the folded portion at the front for boys, or the bottom for girls.  I love using a combination of both inserts if we are going for a long car ride or running a lot of errands.  I know we will not have any leaks. I cannot say enough about how much I LOVE this diaper.  The quality of materials used really shows in the diaper.  There are some diapers I own and really want more of, and the Funky Fluff bamboo Fusion is on that list.  I would really love to have some more of these. But wait, there is more!!!  I also received the Funky Fluff wet bag in teal.  This is not your ordinary wet bag.  The Funky Fluff wet bag has two pockets.  Impressed?  You should be. Right after it arrived, we went to the zoo with a friend who was in love with this wet bag, both the color and that it had two pockets.  Both pockets have zippers to keep smells in.  They are also both waterproof.  That means you can store your clean diapers in one pocket, and then your dirty in the other.  I love this because it means I don’t have to take the entire diaper bag everywhere.  If we have a quick errand to run, I can throw a few diapers, wipes, my wallet, etc. in the outer pocket of the wet bag.  When I change him, we just throw the dirty one in the large pocket.  The bag measures 12″ by 15″. There is also a handy snapping strap so you can hook the wet bag to a stroller, door handle, the diaper bag, or just for easy carrying.  The Funky Fluff wet bag can hold up to 10 diapers!  Have I mentioned that it is just a gorgeous bag and I will still use it long after having kids in diapers?  It is the one bag Maggie likes to try and steal to stick some toys in when we leave the house. I did run into a few problems with my diaper.  After the first couple of washes, there was a corner of the insert that came undone.  I contacted Kathy, and she quickly was able to explain and fix the problem.  I was so impressed with the customer service I received. Sometimes we come across bamboo soakers where the outer fabric isn’t cut exactly the same as the inner layers and therefore isn’t surged properly.  It doesn’t happen often because we do our best to pick out those defects during quality control.  However, at times the issue doesn’t became apparent until the soaker goes through a few washes.  I’m very sorry that you experienced this. You’ll find that the soaker won’t rip any further, however, when concerns like this come to our attention the issue is corrected.  We can send you a new soaker to replace this one as we would with our customers.   Then, as I was retaking the pictures for this post, as I unsnapped the insert from the diaper, the snap on the diaper pulled away with the insert.  This just happened last night, so I am waiting to hear back. What is your favorite color combination of Funky Fluff diapers?  Which feature is your favorite? Get Funky with it and get your own, or enter to win a diaper AND a wet bag from December 1-7th. *Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned products for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are 100% my own and only influenced by my experience with the products and […]

Better view of the world! Babies become independent quicker Sleep better Learn more Babies are happier! The Boba diaper dude I reviewed is amazing!  To start with, let’s all go gaga over the color!  I love the camo.  We love to hunt, so the camo is our style.  John is never too excited about anything that we get to review, but he was pretty excited about this one. First and foremost, a carrier has to be comfortable or it just isn’t worth using.  I’m happy to say, Boba got it right!  Even my sister and cousin agree and they both have neck and back troubles.  Here’s a story: But, I think I made a babywearing fan the other day.  Our carriers have gotten a lot of work lately.  We had the garage sale at my sisters….then moved it to our house.  Softball has started, usually at bedtime or close to it.  Then, we went to track and field day just the other day with my sister to watch my niece and nephew.  Charlie man fell asleep right before lunch time and was sleeping in my arms after nursing.  I had to take Maggie to the bathroom, so I handed him to my sister to hold.  She was loving up on the snuggles!  He stayed asleep but it was time to go watch the kids again.  I told her we could just put the Boba right around them as she was holding him, so that’s what we did.  Now, a few years ago, my sister was in a car accident and can’t handle things on her neck, or usually her back, so we weren’t sure how it would go.  Good news!  It didn’t bother her at all.  When I first put it on her, she said, wow, this is really comfortable and way easier than carrying him.  She said, “I could never understand how or why you put him in the carriers so often.  Now I do.”  See, I made a believer out of her. Short stuff sister with back and neck pain comfortably wearing the Boba.  You can see how the carrier hugs baby into you. The Boba Diaper Dude fits comfortably for people 5’0″ up to 6’3″ but I can say that it does fit comfortably for my sister who is 4’11.  The range of the waistband is 25″ – 58″ so it will fit a wide range of wearers.  The shoulder straps feel like they sit farther out on my shoulders.  It makes me think that it’s the perfect carrier for broad shouldered people {daddy perhaps}.  Read on for the review and check out my video for more info on the features as well as how to put your child in the front and back carry. Onto the rest of the awesome features.  Everything about the Boba Diaper Dude is easily adjustable which I find especially important when you are putting your precious cargo in it and need to be comfortable.  While wearing the carrier, you can quickly and easily adjust the chest strap and shoulder straps.  I love the adjustability of the shoulder straps because there are times when Charlie needs to nurse and I am doing something.  The fact that I can just loosen the straps a little and he can nurse has been a lifesaver more than once!  The carrier is designed to hug your little one, and it looks like it hugs them, right into your body.  It’s so sweet!  During our garage sale, I can’t tell you how many comments I got on how comfy he looked in it.  The “sliders” {my term} that the straps adjust on allow for the easy adjusting, but also keep it from slipping.  Once you have adjusted the straps to where you want them, they can be rolled up and secured using the elastic bands on each strap so you don’t have tons of dangly parts to get in the way. I realize now that my sister had the strap crooked One thing I noticed a big difference in was that the back of the carrier rises 2-3″ higher than many other similar carriers.  I found this especially comforting while wearing Charlie on my back.  I always felt like he was secure. Some other features worth noting – the removable sleeping hood.  Love love love it!!!  Charlie really loves being in the Boba.  Usually, he is asleep in minutes, sometimes before I even have him fully strapped in.  I hate seeing his head droop to the side or backwards.  I feel him snuggle up against my back and get ready to snap the hood on.  He sleeps comfortably, and lets me know when he is awake because then the hood makes him mad, hehe.  I had a tough time getting the hood snapped by myself at first in the back carry, but once I realized it was much easier to stick the hood into the pocket leaving the straps out, then it was much easier.  With four different snap settings and an adjustable strap, the hood will fit over any size baby.  The hood can be removed and stored in the pouch it snaps into.   The hood also makes a great cover from the sun.  Also in this pouch are snaps to allow for adjustable head support to secure baby’s head. The removable foot straps.  As with everything else on the Boba, they are adjustable  Simply unsnap completely and slide the straps out of the loop if you want them off.  To adjust them, snap them together where you want them using at least 2 snaps.  To move them forward or backwards, simply slide them along the hidden cord.  Charlie is hit or miss with whether he wants to use the footstraps, so we just follow his lead. Shoulder strap holders.  If you need to carry a purse or diaper bag while using the carrier, of course Boba makes it easy!  Just unsnap, place your purse, and snap it back together.  I don’t usually carry the diaper bag if I’m using the carrier, so generally, this spot has been used more for teethers or toys that we snap on.  There is one on each shoulder strap. Storage pockets.  A must have!  Especially if you aren’t carrying a purse or diaper bag.  The zippered pocket along the bottom of the carrier is perfect for storing my keys, license, bank card, and who knows what else.  The pouch where the hood is stored is great because it is a little bigger, measuring _x_.  There are elastic bands on either side of the inside of this pouch where you can hook your keys or whatever else it may be.  Above where the foot straps are attached is a small pocket on each side of the carrier which I think is perfect for things like chapstick which I need all the time! You can also adjust the carrier to make it suitable for newborns without any extra pieces.  Here is a quick video on how to do it.  It takes a few minutes, and isn’t ideal if you switch regularly between carrying a newborn and an older infant or toddler in it. I can only say wonderful things about our Boba.  I love the camo with the bright orange stitching.  I love the comfort of the carrier, and I love how high the back of the carrier is.  Charlie and I use our Boba almost daily and even daddy likes the print. Buy it:  Visit Boba and get your very own carrier today!  To stay up to date on Boba fun, be sure to like them on Facebook. Win a Boba Carrier, Boba Wrap, or Boba Air.  Ends May 31st.  Good […]

A Day Out with 3 Kids + Combi Fold N Go Double Stroller Review

[…]by kids.  I’ve always been a big advocate of baby wearing because it is just easier for me most of the time.  With 3 kids now, things are a bit different.  If we plan to be out and about for the day, a stroller for them to plop down in has become a must.  Even if the stroller only holds our stuff most of the day, it is a lifesaver.  When we had a chance to review the Combi Fold N Go Double Stroller, I was thrilled!  After receiving our Combi Shuttle, I kind of fell in love with their products.  I was certain that I would be impressed with this stroller, and when it arrived, I was not let down. To start with, there is some assembly needed.  By some, I mean, clear about 5 minutes {at the most} out of your day because that is as long as it will take you to put it together.  You can check out the video below to see just how simple it is. It was so easy to assemble our @combiusa Fold N Go Double Stroller and the kids couldn’t wait to go for a walk. #ad Read our full review on #ourpieceofearthblog #flipagram Made with @flipagram See full video at flipagram.com/summers1405 A video posted by Our Piece of Earth (@summers1405) on Apr 30, 2015 at 9:09am PDT I barely had it together before the kids were jumping in and begging to head out somewhere.  I figured that since they were SOOOO excited, we would head out for a walk down the street to see if the horses were out.  I had the kids all buckled in and John started asking why I was doing that when I would have to take them out right away since we were still in the house.  He was so certain that it wouldn’t fit through the door.  I tried telling him that it would, but he didn’t believe me.  And…out the front door we went with it. That’s right folks, this double stroller fits through standard doors, making it the perfect stroller for pretty much anywhere, the mall, the store, and wherever else you may need it.   I immediately noticed a few features that I loved.  You know, sometimes, it’s all about the food, am I right?  There are cup holders for both seats, a snack holder in between the seats, as well as a cup holder for the parent.  If we are headed out with the stroller, you can bet we will have our water bottles with us and snacks too.  The adult cup holder is deep enough that my water bottles stay in while we are strolling around.  All of the cup and snack holders are completely removable which makes for easy washing. Not only is there an extra large basket on the bottom, there are also storage pockets on the back of both of the seats.  You can completely remove the basket on the bottom if you need to in just seconds.  I know with a lot of the strollers we have had, there just isn’t enough room to store our things so we hook the diaper bag onto the stroller.  That works great unless nobody is sitting down, then it tips over the stroller.  We haven’t run into that with the Combi Fold n Go Double Stroller.  We had 3 packed lunch boxes, diapers, wipes, a wet bag, our water bottles, sweatshirts, Henry’s blanket, and probably a few other things when we went to the zoo.  There was still room in the basket and we hadn’t even touched the back pockets yet.  This stroller has more storage than any other stroller I have seen.   I also love the 5 point harness buckle system.  When my nephew was a baby, he was a chunkier!  While we were out at the fair, he leaned forward so far that he popped the buckle on that stroller and fell on his noggin.  {He was fine}.  I vowed that day to not have a stroller that didn’t have some sort of lap bar to ensure that never happened again.  While this isn’t a lap bar, it is equally as effective.  It’s perfect for baby Henry.  Since he hasn’t been sitting up by himself all that long, having him very secure if he is sitting in the stroller is very important.  I like that you can still buckle the child but not use the shoulder harness.  That is perfect for the older 2.  The shoulder harness is adjustable to fit both taller and smaller children securely. The easy to use padded reclining seats are awesome.  You can easily slide it back if baby falls asleep or is more comfortable reclined.  To add to the comfort, there is a foot rest built into the front of the stroller so their little legs can rest comfortably. The canopy is very large.  You know how often times things have a canopy but it doesn’t actually cover or protect anything?  Not this time.  This extra large canopy will keep the sun out or shelter them from the rain or snow.  There is a flap on the backside where the parent can flip it up to allow for greater ventilation.  Even with that flap down, it is still well ventilated. Okay, do you love the comfort features?  Keep reading for the other features that make this stroller one of my favorites.   Featuring front wheel suspension with lockable front swivel wheels allowing for easy steering.  No joke, I can spin circles in this with one hand, it steers that well.  The one step linked brake system ensures that you set the brake when you want, and it releases easily when you are ready to get moving again. Probably the biggest WOW factor of the Combi Fold n Go Double Stroller is that it can be fully closed with one hand.  Yes, I said it.  One hand.  Where your child sits, there is a flap. Under that flap is a black handle {Clearly labeled so you can’t miss it}.  To close the stroller, press the red button on the side, grab the black handle and pull up.  Then lock it closed using the black hook on the side.  To lift it, grab the black handle located under the flaps on both seats.  Check out the video below to see how truly easy it is to close one handed. I was already a fan of Combi products, and the Combi Fold n Go Double Stroller didn’t let me down.  From the vibrant colors to the high quality and ease of use, this stroller fits perfectly into our life.  The kids love using it and I love having space for whatever we need.   Packing for an all day outing with 3 kids can be daunting, but here is my shortlist of things you may need. ~Diapers ~Wetbag to hold dirty diapers ~Wet wipes ~Sunscreen ~Hats ~Bug Spray/Lotion ~A few band-aids {Please tell me I’m not the only one who has to have these} ~Water bottles or something to drink ~Lunch or snacks ~Extra clothes ~Formula if necessary ~Camera ~Cell phone ~Wallet ~Blanket depending on what you are doing, where you are going ~Baby Carrier.  Having 3 kids, this makes life so much easier for me.  I can nurse the baby while we continue on with what we were doing.   Our stroller gets its biggest workout on Thursdays during softball season where it is loaded down with 2 kids, my softball bag, snacks, drinks, jackets, blankets, bats, balls, and whatever else we may need to get through an hour or two of softball.   You can check out the Combi Fold n Go Double Stroller and the other Combi products by visiting the Combi website.  To find out about new product releases, reviews, and so much more, be sure to visit Combi on […]

DIY Personalized Glitter Water Bottle

[…]been having so much fun, it is amazing how much information these little ones can soak up.  One of the funnest parts of our learning adventures is actually our geography, which really surprises me because that was never one of my favorite subjects growing up.  I had found an idea online and amped it up to be more of a fit for us.  This week, we are learning about Ethiopia.  Fact:  going into this – I knew NOTHING about Ethiopia but could probably {maybe} find it on a map.  My favorite part of homeschool is that not only do I get to learn right along with the kids, but we get to bring what we are learning about to life.  Today I will be sharing some DIY glitter water bottles that we made, but first, why we are making them.   Our geography curriculum includes reading some books on the area we are studying, doing a fun worksheet that includes coloring the flag, and making a traditional meal.  One book I stumbled across in my research was A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.  Nya, a young girl walks 2 hours each way twice a day to find clean water.  During the dry season, her family has to move and dig through the mud to hopefully find clean water.  It pulled at my heartstrings and I can’t wait for it to get here in the next few days so I can read all of it!  I mean, I have a water cooler in the kitchen and fill my water bottle up whenever I want to.  I felt lost when it was broken for a few weeks and we had to keep a jug of water in our refrigerator.  I can’t imagine not knowing if or when we could get more water to drink. One thing we decided to do after talking about Ethiopia and the water crisis was to make the kids some new water bottles of their own.  We all have our own water bottles and they go everywhere with us.  The kids have been begging for new ones and this was the perfect time to get them.  They were so excited and even more excited when I began working on making them extra special.  They were each getting a glitter ombre type water bottle with their name on it.  They were glued to my side during the entire process. They are super easy to make, but you know – glitter.  It goes everywhere.  That’s why it’s so much fun!  So, let’s gather up the materials and get to it. Materials Stainless steel water bottle Extra Fine Glitter Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge Foam Brush Painters Tape or Masking Tape Tape Measure or Ruler Triple Thick Clear Coat Stencil with Name or Design {Optional} Let’s get crafty! The first thing you want to do is wipe the water bottle clean using either water or alcohol. Next, apply your stencil.  We cut ours in vinyl so it stuck easily to the water bottle, but you may have to tape your stencil name on. Decide what color glitter you will be using.  For Maggie’s, we used light pink, dark pink and purple.  For Charlie’s, he chose blue and silver.  Decide where you want to tape off and separate the colors. ***I thought I’d be fancy and do the names in two colors.  Big regret.  It still looks cool, but the tape on top of the stencil made it pull up on Maggie’s and I had to redo it.  Plus, on Charlie’s, where the blue glitter is, it blends into the blue cup so it is a little tougher to read the top half of his name.*** Place tape around water bottle.  Begin by tearing off a large enough piece of tape.  Then, cut small slits around the top and bottom to allow it to stretch or bunch more easily, allowing you to evenly place it around the water bottle.  Use a ruler or tape measure as you go around to ensure it is in an even line across. Place a second piece of tape over where the slits are if necessary to prevent you from getting glitter where you don’t want it.  Don’t forget to tape along the top and bottom of the bottle if necessary. Now is the fun part!  Apply a thin, even coat of mod podge on the surface that you want to cover using the foam brush. I recommend using a small cake pan or cookie sheet when working with glitter so that it doesn’t end up everywhere.  Holding the water bottle in one hand, shake the glitter around the water bottle as you spin it.  Apply an even coat, covering the entire surface.  Gently tap the edge of the bottle to allow any excess to fall off.  Let dry thoroughly, roughly an hour. When it is dry, apply a second layer of mod podge over your layer of glitter.  Reapply the later of glitter.  We ended up adding in a little of our second color when we did this second coat to make it a more gradual color change on Maggie’s.  We only did one layer on Charlie’s because it covered perfectly.  Again, let it dry completely.  Repeat this step until you have the look you want. Once you have finished, repeat again for any open space you have.  I still had to do the middle of Maggie’s water bottle but I didn’t tape it off because I was alright with the colors blending a little.  I repeated the mod podge, glitter routine until it was perfect for us. Now comes the moment of wow.  Peel off the tape and the stencil.  Ta-da!  Your masterpiece is almost finished, just one more step. Spray with triple thick clear coat.  Let dry.   Now that they could FINALLY use their water bottles, they could focus on school work.  We read through our books on Ethiopia and they got busy drawing and coloring the flag.  We talked about interesting places to visit, the size of the country, population and what they are known for.  We talked some more about the water crisis and how it might make us feel if we were there. We talked about ways that we can help families facing no water.  One thing we talked about was how people and companies sometimes do things to help other countries out and one thing we talked about was the Emergen-C® raspberry packets that we picked up for me at the store.  I’m a fan of Emergen-C®, especially during the winter months around here.  Since we were out, I picked some raspberry flavor up from Walmart.  I never get enough sleep and know I need all of the help I can get. Emergen-C® is packed with B vitamins, antioxidants† , electrolytes plus more vitamin C than 10 oranges^. With over 20 flavors, you have plenty of delicious varieties to choose from.” † Zinc and Manganese ^Based on the USDA.gov nutrient database value for a large, raw orange.”  Emerge and See. Homeschool Kindergarten with Usborne

[…]reading book after book was our school day and I’m pretty happy with that.  If the majority of their education comes on my lap, we must be doing something right. I realized then that while I enjoy buying curriculum, we all want a little change and {at least for now while they are young} we just have more fun doing school the Usborne way.  We definitely have other books that we love to use but a ton of our school books are Usborne and it’s working wonderfully for us.  I wanted to share what an Usborne kindergarten curriculum could look like.  I’ll try not to get too long winded, but I also want to give you some options because we all teach differently and kids all learn differently.  Using Usborne books allows you so much flexibility to keep your kids having fun while they learn all sorts of things.  Pick one or more from each category.  As always, leave me a message if you need help choosing or have any questions. Language Arts Alphabet Wipe Clean or First Words.  There are so many different wipe clean books to chose from.  If your child is just beginning to write – the Beginning Writing book is perfect.  Full of fun pictures, your kids will never realize they are learning to write their letters {making this perfect for a strong willed child who just doesn’t want to write their letters….I may have personal experience there}.  The alphabet wipe clean flashcards are great for practicing.  Put them on a key ring and they are perfect for practicing on car rides. Handwriting My First Story Writing Book.  If your child has mastered the art of writing their letters and numbers, it’s time for something different.  I’ve never been a fan of copy work, it’s boring to me, I imagine it’s not that fun for them.  That’s why I love this book and was so excited to get it for the kids.  They will spend the year writing their very own stories.  Go at your own pace as they learn all about the different things that make up a story, expand their vocabulary, and so much more.  The early pages are short, one to two word answers they can copy from multiple choice lists.  The margins of the book are filled with thought starter words and ideas and pictures to spark their imagination.  They are given the opportunity to draw pictures, write short stories, increase their hand writing skills and have fun doing all of it.  Not only that, but you can choose to write or spell it all out for your child or let them spell it out themselves.  They learn to think beyond a simple sentence and really describe the characters, the setting, the events that take place.  {Can you tell that I really love this book?}  There are other titles available in this series of books. Reading My Very First Reading Library .  I cannot say enough about how amazing this set is.  This set makes learning fun and more of a team thing.  The set contains 50 books and is designed to help your child from learning to read through a second grade level.  The first  books in the set are labeled with numbers 1-15.  The early books each have two books with the same number where kids will practice the same sounds.  The books are dual readers.  That means that you read them WITH your child.  Your child reads a few words, then you read so you are taking turns.  Your child can feel the success at having read a book right from the start. The back of the book contains a letter or sound list of what letters or letter combinations the child needs to know to read that book.  There are also some games in the back of each book to work on reading and reading comprehension.  You can also follow the links in the book for more activities and a word list for extra practice.  You use the set at your child’s speed. Phonics Readers.  Whether you want your child to practice more or your child wants some books they can read on their own outside of the reading library, the phonics readers are a great addition to your homeschool library.  At their very affordable price tag, you are sure to want these in your home. Learning Palette.  These fun discs are self correcting and customizable to what your child is ready for.  Start with matching letters or jump into beginning word sounds, it’s all up to your child. Math We know every kid is different.  Some are just starting to learn about the numbers and recognize them while others can already do simple adding like 1+1=2.  There are a lot of options, but here are just a few of the options Usborne offers for early math. Learning Palette.  This fun book will introduce your child to numbers 1-10.  They will learn to count groups of things and match them to the correct number.  They will also do simple math as they follow the bus on a bus route for the day and touch on things like first, second, third and more or less. Count to 100.  This is such a fun way to introduce larger groups of numbers.  As they begin counting 1 object, then 2, 3, etc., they will progress into 10, 20, 30, all the way to 100.  This book even introduces early multiplication skills when kids identify that the birds are in groups of 5 on a branch or the fish are in groups of 10 by color.  The pages are filled with fun questions about the pictures on that page that keep kids interested and the wheels turning in their mind. First Numbers Sticker Book.  We used this in preschool with my son.  He needed structure to keep from misbehaving and this was the only way I could get him to cooperate.  Each page teaches one number.  They place the sticker on the number, stickers on that number of items that fit in the picture, and then a little practice at the bottom of the page writing that number.  Finish out the book with different counting sticker activities. Wipe Clean 1 2 3.  I love the Usborne wipe clean books.  1 2 3 is a great way for kids to start to identify a number and have fun doing it.  The objects on the page are in groups to go with the number that page teaches.  As they progress through the pages, they continue practicing.  There are a few other number wipe clean books as well to choose from. Wipe Clean First Math.  Now that they know their numbers and how to write them, it’s time to have some fun with them.  Wipe Clean First Math will have them counting up objects like the smoke from the train and adding them together.  Your kids will have fun learning to add and subtract in this wipe clean book of monster fun. Lift the Flap First Math.  We know kids love touching books.  Let your child explore and learn about adding and subtracting up to ten as they lift flap after flap. First Math Slide and See Subtracting {also available for Adding}.  Learn to subtract from five with these fun pictures that go along with a quick story.  Slide the butterfly away to find out what five minus one equals.  These are a great, very visual way for your child to see what they are doing. Wipe Clean Telling the Time.  Learn all about telling the time in this fun wipe clean book.  From writing the time to drawing hands on a clock to learning about quarter after, quarter to, etc. Lift the Flap Telling the Time.  Learn to tell time in this fun book with over 125 flaps to lift. First Illustrated Math Dictionary.  I probably wouldn’t include this except that my daughter loves to pull it out to read it.  I call it learning, she calls it fun.  I’ll just leave it here and you can do with it as you wish.  Turn the pages as you learn more math concepts for some fun illustrations to explain what they are learning. Learning Wrap Ups.  You guys!  These things are awesome.  Each key has a different number.  You start by going down the left side and adding one to whatever number it is.  Then wrap the string around the next number on the left, add one and wrap it around the answer on the right side.  Finish by going all the way down, then turn the key over.  Each key is self correcting.  You can purchase addition, subtracting, and when they are ready – multiplication, division, fractions {or states and capitals}.     Science 365 Science Activities.  I love this book!  We are doing an experiment based science study,   The activities are arranged by what it is about.  For example, for density there are multiple activities you can do.  Choose one or do one, talk about it and try a different one to add in a new concept. Science Activities Vol. 1.  Volume 1 teaches about water, light, mirrors and magnets with fun activities that your kids will love.  Use this alone or use volumes 1, 2 and 3 for an exciting year of science. First Encyclopedia of Science.  The Usborne encyclopedias are so amazing!  Choose a page in the book to read about and learn.  Follow the internet links for more info about the topic. Illustrated Elementary Science.  Let the kids lead the way with this encyclopedia.  Go wherever their interests take them. Science may be one of my favorite things to teach.  If you are looking for more than just an experiment based science curriculum, let’s explore some more options.  What I love most though, is that there is science in everything, so pick up some books and have some fun.   Beginner books.  There are a ton of topics to choose from.  At only $4.99 each, you can choose them all.  The best part is that once your kids are independently reading, they can practice with these books as well.  Each book is packed full of amazing illustrations as well as tons of information.  You will find a glossary as well as internet links for more relevant information on the topic.  I like to use these and create entire theme units around them. My First Reference Book About Our World.  There are a few other titles in this series.  With colorful illustrations, small bits of information, this book takes it another step with different questions to see what they know.  It also has a quiz and glossary in the back and internet links.   Lift the Flap.  Usborne offers so many different lift the flap options with tons of titles in each one.  The See Inside books engage young readers with snippets of information behind every flap.  The Look Inside Your Body book is one of my all time favorites.  You lift a flap to find another flap and another as you uncover the different layers of the human body.  I think I still learn something new every time we read it.  First Questions and answers are another lift the flap book with shorter stories on a specific topic. Big Book of the Body.  These are so much fun!  Fold out the page which turns into four pages of the human body for you to explore.  It’s a very visual and fun way to learn about your body.  There are plenty of other Big Book titles to keep the fun going.   Geography   Choose an atlas and have fun with it.  I’m including the ages from the website, but you know your kids best and what will grab their attention to help them learn more. Big Picture Atlas A wonderfully big picture atlas for children to learn the basis of world geography. Lots of busy maps with fun illustrations to learn about the food and culture of other countries as well as capital cities. Putting pictures onto facts helps with memory and this big, satisfying book will help children memorize geography facts with ease.  Ages 4+ Children’s Picture Atlas I love the illustrations in this atlas.  The beginning pages cover different types of habitats or environments.  At the bottom of the page are a few items to search for on the maps.  It even covers how to identify the type of area by introducing a map key.  On each continent map page, there is a box on the page of the world with that continent highlighted.  A fun quiz at the end gives the kids a chance to see what they remember.  Ages 3+ Lift the Flap Picture Atlas  This atlas is packed full of tidbits of information about each continent.  There is also a flap full of facts about that country.  It also introduces a map key and information about the different types of maps.  There is a giant fold out map at the end complete with a flag about each country.  Ages 6+ Sticker Picture Atlas of the World This beautifully illustrated picture atlas is packed with over 350 stickers. Explore the maps to see the world’s most famous sights, and find out where different people and animals live. Place the stickers of famous sights, animals, etc.. on the grayed out areas of each continent.  There is also a spot on each page of the world map with that pages continent highlighted.  Ages 6+ The Usborne Geography Encyclopedia This newly updated book will introduce you to the whole field of geography, from rocks and their formation, the Solar System, weather and climates, and oceans, to human settlements, population trends, diverse ecosystems and environmental concerns.  This book is packed full of so much information and it is more in depth so it will keep growing with them.  There are TONS of different maps in this book as well as world flags.   I’m adding this to a kindergarten post because my kids love looking through it and it creates a lot of fun conversations.  Ages 10+ {but mine are 6, 5 and 2 and it gets used often}. Flags of the World to Color When I ordered this, I figured it was just another coloring book.  It is so much more than that.  Kids discover information about a country, a picture of the flag and then an outline of the flag for kids to color.  It’s so much fun!  Ages 6+ Flags Sticker Book With pictures of 200 flags, this fact-filled book includes the national flag of every country in the world, each one with a sticker to match. Maps of the continents show where each country is.  Ages 7+ Shine a Light Wonders of the USA  If you aren’t familiar with the Shine a Light books, they are so much fun!  Grab a flashlight, turn the lights down and have some fun.  Better yet – build a fort!  Each page takes your children to a different wonder of the USA.  Statue of Liberty, Mardi Gras, NASA’s Mission Control in Houston, and so much more.  Ages 4-8 {but my 2 year old thinks they are cool too}. HISTORY Then and Now   My kids love reading this book.  Each page takes you through a day then and a day now in a different setting.  The kitchen, school room, etc..  It’s a great visual comparison of then and now and it asks questions like how is the classroom different, etc.. Who Were the First Native Americans  Did they really send smoke signals? What was a Powwow? These are just two of the questions you’ll find tackled in this look at the Native American peoples. Packed full of fun, facts and illustrations about everyday life in early North America, this book has the answers. (“Usborne are to be congratulated on publishing yet another excellently produced book in their Starting Point History series.” Scottish Association of Teachers of History) Sticker Books There are so many options here that I just couldn’t choose one or two to feature here.  From First World War sticker books to Renaissance and tons of different decades featured in the Historical Sticker Dressing Fashion books; choose from 1920, 1950 and so much more.  Such a fun way to learn a little about history while improving fine motor skills at the same time. Art Depending on your game plan for art this year, whether you want the focus on creating art or art history, we have a book for you. The Usborne Complete Book of Art Ideas.  I love this book {and more importantly, so do the kids} because of the multitude of different ideas.  Go beyond just painting or drawing and let kids discover shading ideas and effects, using pastels, watercolors, wax, inks and so much more.  With well over 200 different ideas, your kids will have so much fun all year long. Lift the Flap Art.  Packed with amazing paintings, prints and sculptures, this book invites you to peek inside the world of art. Lift the flaps to reveal how art is made, explore interesting details and uncover hidden clues. My First Art Sticker Book.  This fabulous book is full of famous works of art and plenty of chances to make pictures of your own, using the stickers provided. Foreign Language I’m aware most people probably aren’t teaching a foreign language to kindergarten students.  I wanted to give my kids the option so I allowed them to choose from the 18 different language books that Usborne has to offer.  I opted for the First Thousand Words books.  Maggie chose French to learn.  I’m so glad these books are designed for kids because my French knowledge is extremely limited.  That’s the fun of these books – each two page spread is a setting.  The beach, kitchen, etc. and every object is labeled with the French word for the object.  You can visit the Usborne links and choose our book and page numbers and LISTEN to how you pronounce each of the words.  So easy and fun.  I don’t really force this on her, I allow her to pull it out when she wants to.  She practices repeating the words as she points to their picture in the book.  I recently added in the First Fun with Spanish DVD.  The kids think it’s pretty fun and have now been walking around speaking “spanish” and it’s adorable.   Teaching kindergarten with Usborne gives you so much flexibility and so many hours of fun for you and your kids.  Which books will you choose?  Choose some and make it your entire curriculum or add them onto whatever curriculum you choose.  I bet you’ll find any curriculum you purchase likely has Usborne books listed as supplements.  The possibilities are endless.  Happy […]
