Your baltic amber questions answered

When Maggie was a baby, we had a teething necklace for her and I am so glad we did.  I knew when Charlie was born that I wanted one for him.  But when we first got Maggie one, we had a lot of questions, and I know I am not alone.  While Baltic Amber  is said to relieve teething pain, tame baby’s irritability and relieve inflammation in the throat, ear, and stomach, would it really work?  That’s why I was so excited that Julie from Spark of Amber agreed to do a Q and A with me and answer all of my {and your} baltic amber questions to go along with my review.

What makes baltic amber teething necklaces work?

The active ingredient in amber is Succinic Acid.  It is in the surface of the amber and is released through contact with the skin’s oils.  Amber has been used for centuries in Europe and other countries for pain-relief and as an anti-inflammatory.  *They are not intended to be chewed on.*
How long until they start working?

There is no set time.  Some people say they start working immediately, others have found it takes some time to start working.
How long does a necklace/bracelet last before it needs to be replaced?

That is really different for everyone. The amber doesn’t wear out. Hazelwood and amber necklaces need to be replaced every 6-12 months, but necklaces with only Baltic Amber do not need to be replaced. However, of course, regular wear and tear, especially from a toddler, sometimes necessitates the need for a replacement necklace! Another reason a teething necklace may need to be replaced is if it got so much build-up on it from every day wear, that it was just impossible to get clean. For adults, with regular wear, an amber necklace or bracelet should last a long time.

How do you clean the jewelry?

If buildup occurs, Baltic Amber necklaces can be cleaned using a slightly damp cloth and dried in the sun.  They should not come into contact with chemicals and should be removed before swimming or bathing.   I am not convinced that setting in the sun makes them any  more effective or anything like that, but it is definitely the most natural and the best way to dry them.

Why does it say not to use until 3 years of age?

The “do not use up until 3 years of age” is there to abide by US guidelines for products with small parts. Legislation went into effect requiring all businesses selling any item with small parts to label them for ages 36 months or older. We have to abide by these regulations and include that in our description to be in compliance. We have many safety measures incorporated into our necklaces. Each one is knotted between each bead so that if one bead came off, the others would not fall off. Also, the beads are very small to prevent choking.  The amber is natural and non-toxic.

Can it be worn overnight?

The necklace should be removed from the kids overnight.  It could pose a strangulation hazard.
Do they really help keep your hormones in check?

As far as keeping your hormones in check, Amber has been used in many countries for many different things. I get testimonials sent to me for different uses of amber all the time. However, I have never tried it for hormone relief, so I would hesitate to say one way or the other. It’s certainly worth a try!

Is baltic amber helpful with behavior {ADHD}?

We do sell a calming gemstone necklace that combines raw Baltic Amber, Lepidolite, and Black Tourmaline (both Lepidolite and Black Tourmaline have traditionally been used for attention/focus/calming.) This necklace is called the Serenity necklace, and is designed for children who need a bit of extra help to stay calm, focused, and attentive. It is also simply beautiful to wear!   In the fall, we hope to add Serenity necklaces in teen and adult sizes as well.

I hope Julie has answered your baltic amber questions.  If you have more questions, be sure to post them and I will be sure to get them answered.

So what do I think?

Baltic Amber, Spark of Amber, teething necklace

I LOVE this necklace for Charlie.  It is gorgeous, and he looks adorable in it whether he is dressed or just in his diaper.  And, well, he’s such a handsome boy anyways, wouldn’t you agree?  I have had people ask me, don’t they pull on them all the time?  And the answer is no.  Most of the time when I put it back on him, he doesn’t even touch it.  Once in awhile, he will pull on it for a few minutes until he gets distracted.  Which leads me to something else I love – it doesn’t break if he does pull on it a little.  But if it did, it is good to know that it is knotted between each bead just in case.  The necklace hooks together by turning one bead into the other.  Charlie can’t just pull and have it come off.

The necklace we received is the Seashore.  Because these teething necklaces are made of Baltic Amber pieces that are polished, but left in their natural “nugget” shapes, each necklace is different and the size and shape of the nuggets will vary.  At 13″ long, it’s perfect for those little ones.  Made with 100% natural anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, and calming properties, the healing oils of the Baltic Amber can help to relieve teething pain, tame baby’s irritability and relieve inflammation in the throat, ear, and stomach.  I am a believer, but every person’s opinion of these may be different.   You will have to get one for yourself to see how it works for you.
